ZZR1200 Cyl 1 & 2 not firing.

Just started looking into this issue. First it's intermittent, which is always fun. The bike starts 90% of the time and runs fine, but it has now done this to me maybe 3 times in 2 months and might be getting worse.

It is running on 2 out of the 4 cyl. I started it today and it's running like crap, so I IR heat gunned the exhaust pipes. 2 are hot and 2 were "cold". The 2 "cold" ones are I believe 1 and 2. The two left most cyl. when sitting on the bike.

First thought coil. Then I read two coils, one for cyl. 1 and 4, and another for cyl 2 and 3. Well if cyl 1 and 2 are cold then that's across both coils, which makes no sense?

So I will take it apart and do some troubleshooting. See if 1 and 2 have spark or not, plug wires good. Is there something else I should be looking at?

What about the igniter for the coils? But I suppose since this is across both coils that doesn't makes sense either?

Thanks
jim

Simple things first. Spark plugs, spark plug wires, carb sync, valves, and finally piston rings.
If both non-firing cylinders were on the same coil, your job would be much easier. Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. There are two fuel pumps, so check to make sure both are pumping. Next, check the float vacuum relief in front of the fairing (one on each intake). Tiny bugs sometimes crawl in and make a nest. Lastly, check the rubber o-rings that seal the jet bodies to the float bowls for integrity. Parking on the sidestand for long periods of time lets the two on the higher carbs dry out and rot quicker. Replace all 4 while you're in there.

Found it. Corroded plug wires. Was checking things and the two plug wires just pulled right out of the boot. Issue is you cant redo these sealed boots. Kawasaki part numbers are a coil with hard-wired pig tail and boot separate. Looks like the boot is some kind of twist lock as you can't open it to crimp. Its a solid piece. Or I suppose order used from Ebay
