Hi.Got the dredded grey wire issue. My 1999 zx9rc2 will not start.Hit start and bike just turns over, plugs are not sparking.checked voltage on grey wire and is is 9.4volts all the way from ignition to igniter. Is this right. If not what should it be and how to rectify problem.Bike was running fine upto a couple of days ago.rode it to work it was fine.Came back to it after work it would not start just turned over.managed to bumpstart after 3rd attempt and rode it home.Left it overnight now it won't start again just cranks over.

The chances are your cam position sensor is faulty, and you just got lucky bump starting it, once the bike is started the bike will keep running even if it then fails, as it only needs the sensor to start the bike.

9.4 volts is ok on the gray wire.
The fact the starter turns over says the clutch switch is probably ok.
Another possibility is dirty contacts in the kill switch, as any crappy contacts in that will kill the voltage at the stick coil when the ECU tries to fire a coil, even though you will still get battery voltage there if you volt check it.

So do a resistance check through the kill switch, your looking for zero resistance, if you get more than 1-ohm that's probably your problem, if that's okay then cam position sensor, borrow one to confirm.

12 volts is too much on the gray wire, as the ECU needs to see a few volts difference between it and the battery voltage, or it will think the bike has been hotwired by some tea leaf. (thief) There should be a 100-ohm resistor in the ignition switch between the brown and gray wire or white and grey wire with the ignition switched on.
