My P1 has 125K km (75K miles) from new and I have not had a single mechanical failure. Original motor with no work (including clutch) other than routine maintenance. I follow the recommended maintenance schedule religiously. This includes brake and master cylinder rebuilds every 4-5 years. Suspension and steering bearings get greased every two years. Never had any of those fail either.
Only repairs I have done are:
1. Wiring repairs due to dealer screw up when still getting warranty service.
2. clutch pushrod seal (permanently fixed with spacer)
3. Fork seals (common wear item IMO)
4. Tires, chain, sprockets replaced at normal intervals
5. I had one headlight bulb burn out and that is the only bulb I have replaced.
6. Brake pads are still originals and have plenty of meat left on them (mostly ride back roads)
Reliable bike? Absolutely. Has never left me stranded or broken down.
I never had 1 electrical problem with my '94.
My only problems were busted turn signals from falling over, fork seals, and clutch plates.
Tires, chain, sprockets replaced when required
Probably the best advice I got was to use Shell premium only, use a really good fuel stabilizer ( I use K100 in all my motors, boats, chainsaws, blowers, chippers) and drain the carbs (leaving the drains open) before winter storage.
