From what I've read the 3rd crankshaft bearing starves due to:
Low oil level
Long wheelies
Oil pooling in the head
Early design ball type oil pressure valve

Any thoughts on lighter or heavier than 10w30?

FWIW I have always run 15w40 diesel in all my large displacement air cooled bikes from CB750F through FJ1200, have never had an internal engine failure of any sort, but am concerned about doing this with the ZX because of the stories I've read about the head retaining oil at high RPM.

You can do what zx9 owners do. "Over-fill" the oil. Just top the oil off until the sight glass is full.

the old designs had horrid oil pickups .. standing on the rear would drain the pump real quick... and the rest as they say is history
