Sport bikes as we know it will change significantly in the next ten years. The younger crowd is not interested. A few of us are creeping up in age, but I don't mean like EZ. How many more years will I be heading down for track days. It will be interesting to watch.

I was extremely excited about this bike ever since I heard the rumors a long time ago. i currently have a 2017 ZX6R, but the most fun I have ever had on a motorcycle was my Ninja 300. Being able to wring it's neck on the street without going 90 in first gear was a blast, but at the end of the day it had poor suspension, poor brakes, and I wasn't about the parallel twin life. I went through many bikes since then before finally getting my dream bike (the 636 before I knew the ZX4R was a thing). Then I found out about this bike and it was like the heavens had answered my prayers and gifted us with the perfect bike.

However. When I saw the price, suspension, frame, and weight I questioned what Kawasaki was doing. I was expecting this to be closed to the Ninja 400 price, maybe 1k more since it's a "race bike". A ninja 400 is $5.3k, a 650 is 8k, and a ZX6R is $10.6k. I thought the ZX4R would be around $7k at the most, but for the price they are asking I'd much rather just keep my ZX6R. Very disappointed, but I can't really complain cause I have a bitchin bike.

Edit: Regarding my use case. I don't track, hell I don't even ride hard in twisties. I've always loved the sport bikes for their looks, sound, riding position, etc. They make me feel like I'm on a rocket vs lounging on a sofa. I know there are many who will give me shit for not using a race bike "how it's intended to be used" but they can all pound sand.

After witnessing the sportbike decline after the 2008 depression era and the emissions crackdown, I am just glad they are still releasing new bikes.
That's a really good point. The R6 is gone in favor of the R7. Interest in sport bikes is waning. Kawi coming out with a 400 four is pretty awesome, all things considered.

I've played with the idea of a grey market import, like a GSXR400 or something, but never took the plunge. This is definitely better than nothing, imho.

Have me stop spending money on the newest toy and ride a very capable GSXR750.
Is that thing even street legal?

I have 2 race bikes and have never went to the track. Yet. I, too, like the looks and sound. Depending on the year of the bike, the riding position is good too.

Shit, it doesn't even have a VIN. It's a bike built from parts, never intended to be a street bike. I don't want a little bike on the street. That's what my ZX12R is for.

Suzuki replacement frame (no VIN), engine from a distruct only bike from the auction. 600 swingarm. 08 subframe, tank and subframe. 08 fiberglass track fairings and ducts. It's a damn Frankenstein like most of my bikes.

What it does have is 25mm Ohlins fork cartridges, shock and damper. Accossatto billet calipers and master. Marchesini magnesium wheels. Full titanium Yoshimura exhaust. Vortex bars and rearsets. Yosh engine case sliders. Bazazz TC, QS, tune on a flashed/deregulated ECU.

Yeah, she's a track only bitch, same as what would have happened to the ZX4.

Like I said before, that gsxr750 is a monster. Even if you did get the zx4, it wouldn't come close to the same level of a track weapon like that bike. What's wrong with having a little bike a on the streets?

My last new bike was for the street. I have zero brand loyalty. I buy the best bike for what I’m looking for. I would have loved a 400 in line 400. I was looking for a sportbike as a daily rider, Florida so all year round. All the little bikes , ninja 300 and cbr small sizes I felt like I would break them riding them just by sitting on them. I ended up with a gsxr600 and it was 9600 new but left over new model. I would have to sit on it first to see if it feels like a bike you could ride hard. But I’m definitely intrigued by a real sportbike 400 like they had in the late 80’s.
