I just got my 14 and was wondering whats the best oil to use? I heard some people saying that you not supposed to change the brand/type of oil that is already in the bike, the previous owner told me he was running royal purple but he switched to a type of oil thats not in my area and is hard to find.

EZ, you're coming across a little jaded for someone new to the forum (Chevy see Off-topic 'Most over asked questions' thread or the ZXF Oil & Lubrication section). :dunno

Chevy, there's no such rule or thought or best, the assumption being that while you're dropping the oil, you're also changing oil filters. Change to whatever oil is recommended for your bike's engine and change it at the recommended intervals. You'll have lots of worry-free miles, probably ending up moving on to a new bike before your ZX-14 shows signs of engine wear.

i used regular for a lil while and then i switched to 20-50 synthetic, however bike felt very sluggish. my bike had a strange noise from time to time (long story please don't ask) in any event we thought running a thicker oil would help and it did, but bike was very sluggish so i ended up running motul 10-40 full synthetic and noise has been there for the last 19000 miles depending on the weather outside and only at a specific rpm, again another story, but that being said i have heard great things about motul and mobil 1. i don't think you can go wrong either way. motul is a lil cheaper, but cheaper is not always better.

I think the reason for all the differing opinions is that you phrased your question "what's the best oil to use". Using the word "best" means this becomes a popularity thing. The owners manual recommends SAE 10W-40 type API SE, SF, or SG. Also API SH, SJ, or SL with JASO MA, MA1, or MA2. It also states not to add oil additives.

Any brand name mineral oil will meet the above specs. Anything better is just psychological gravy. Pay attention to the change intervals, 7500 mi or one year.
