Im doing a head gasket on a friends z900 and when checking the clearences(buckets&shims) the clearence was too large for the biggest shims available, i took the bucket off and noticed the valve collars and retainers have been machined down on 3 of the inlet valves(not worn down),

Im going to replace them anyway but thought i would post and see if anybody would have any idea of why somebody would have done this in the first place?

they have been machined down so the top of the valve is level with the collars and retainers, on the other valves the top of the valve comes up 1mm+

any ideas would be great!

It was probably done without thinking how it would affect shim size requirements. But cannot think of why anyone would do that either. Perhaps the collars are off another model bike.

RIGHT ON! YES!

Congratulations. When you ask yourself if it's possible that you've inherited the worst fubar of a bike problem, you can assert with some confidence that, yes, in fact you are the grand winner today.

Sorry bro. Just trying to find some way to spin it into a positive. :tard
