Hello. Can anyone tell me why I’m having this problem. It’s a 2000 Kawasaki zx900. The temp sensor on the block was broke and the wire was hanging when I purchased it. I’ve since replaced the sensor and hooked the wire back up. When I run test light from the battery’s pos side the tester lights up and the light on the dash goes out. The display just shows 3 dash marks but doesn’t show the temperature. I ran it til the fans came on which was about 8-10 mins but the display still didn’t read anything. What can be my problem?
You have the blue wire on the temp sensor on the back of cylinder number 2 and the light green wire on the neutral switch under the front sprocket cover yes?
If you have a multimeter you can check the resistance through the sensor when cold. Just checked the one on my F2 and that measures 52.7 Kohms.
The display shows the 3 dash marks till the temperature reaches over 50 degrees which is about 10koms through the sensor. As the temperature rises the resistance in the sensor drops and when that resistance gets down below 700Ohms then the LED will start flashing and the display reads HI.
If you pull the wire off the sensor you should only get the 3 dashes, if you then press the wire onto the engine case the display should read HI and the over temp LED should start flashing.

I checked the resistance of the sensor. It read 1. Ohms. Cold. I I was told that was correct because it’s an open switch until it gets hot. If I pull the wire off the sensor the light continues to blink and still reads “HI” connected or not. If I touch the block with the wire from the sensor it still blinks and reads “HI” Its ran long enough for the fans to kick on when I ran a test light from the battery’s pos to the blue wire but the dash still displayed the three dashes.
You have a short in the wire to the clocks, or the clocks are damaged due to putting battery voltage on the blue wire. Take the screen off the bike and unplug the clocks and then do a continuity test on the blue wire to earth, leave the meter connected and go along the loom gently wiggling it to see if you can find the short when the meter will switch to OL open line. Then investigate the blue wire.
You will still need to change the temperature sensor as it sounds faulty.
This is the temperature meter reading after I pulled it out the back of the number 2 cylinder head and it had only been in my hand for about a minute, the second picture shows how the resistance had dropped after being in my hand for five minutes, I'm sure if I put it under boiling water it would show a lot less but I don't want to be burning my hand on it.
Just to let you know the temp sensor is 12mm and my F2 has no radiator fitted at the moment so that's why I removed it to show you as it wouldn't be pissing out coolant everywhere.
