So one thing i notice if my bike only clicks and doesnt turn if i tap the started relay then she turns over...

could this be a low battery issue or is my relay dying?

test the battery and alternator first and if they come up good try knocking the bike into first gear and then back to neutral while holding the starter down. Might be your neutral switch. happens to me quite regularly. Also might be your key switch.. notorious for going bad.

i assume that because i tap on the started relay and it kicks it over then its the starter relay thats the issue.... either low current on the low voltage side of the relay not allowing it to trip over or bad contacts in the relay itself

also take a good look at your starter cable, mine was doing the same thing and it turned out that the cable had rubbed against something and it was shorting out, but when i moved the relay it also moves the wire away from where its shorting out at

I have replaced batteries, relays, cleaned contacts, etc., and I still had the issue... The electrical engineering on these bikes is actually a little poor. The only thing that stopped mine was actually removing the entire wiring harness and cleaning all the connections. Like I said, I had replaced EVERY component including alternator and still had the problem!! Hope yours is simpler and best of luck sir!! haha

ok so from a troubleshooters stand point lets firsts break down the probable causes. the switch, fuse(s), relay(s),and wiring. and first check the cheapest fixes suck as fuse(s) and wiring. be sure to physically check the cable from the starter to the relay for damage because the cable is pretty hidden. if you have to take a ohmmeter to the fuse(s) to properly verify they are in good condition, i have had an old fuse crack and break without blowing before so it wasnt obvious. you can functionally test the relays by providing 12v to the terminals and verifying they are working properly. even check the brushes on the starter itself because if they are worn out it will act as if the bike has a dead battery.

and remember that parts can be expensive so make sure a part is bad before spending your money on a new one

i am having the same problem with my 90 zx7. the bike will just click so i think its gotta be something with the starter relay. I have always had a flat spot on my starter but has never done this before. could the starter just be done? or can starter have a gradual death and mine is finito.

Cleaned my started button contacts and put some dielectric paste in there and then did the same with my started relay... took my battery back to NAPA and they charged it and monitored it for 2 days... was just really dead (gel cell).

So i put it all together and she fired up first time no struggle or anything.

now i just need to adjust my idle again

ive seen starters develop flat spots in the bearing causing a dead spot in the starter

Thanks man thats what i think it was. I got a new starter on there now and it runs perfectly. maybe a winter project is to rebuild that starter. we'll see. i also cleaned up all my wiring and that could have helped the problem as well

not a hard job to do at all, i rebuilt one for my old bike, the hardest part was i had to machine and polish down the armature because the brushes were so worn out that they were chattering against it and i had waves in the armature surface. the bearing i had to cut off with a dremel but installing the new one took less than five minutes with a ball peen and a socket that was the right size for the inner bearing race the whole process took an afternoon to do

what if there isn't even any clicking? my zx7 wont even try to turn over with the good battery. also no power getting to my horn but my blinkers work. any ideas?

Check your main fuse.

i have checked all my fuses are good. I get lights on the panel, blinkers work. but that is it. :/
I'm gonna ask a couple questions here because I have no idea how knowledgeable you are. Is it in neutral? Have you tried starting it with the kickstand up and down(two different attempts, not one)? Have you tried it with the clutch lever in and out?
Have you tried jumping the poles on the starter relay by laying a screwdriver across them with the key on? I'm trying to isolate what's going on. You really didn't give a lot of info.
