OK guys I thought I would be able to self diagnosis but this one has me stumped.

Bought a 97 7 and test rode it in 1st and 2nd. Runs great. Get it home and 3rd and above it sputters at 5k. Can't be carbs because it would do the same in 1St and 2nd right?

Spark issue?

Any help or experience would be great. Thanks

Pic for fun

Nice Looking bike!

Sound like you've got a vacuum line for the airbox/carb vent that isn't connected. this will cause the carbs to not be pressurized as the airbox DOES get pressurized when you get to a higher speed. nothing to do with the actual gear selection, but i understand the confusion.

take the tank off and look for a hose that should be connected to the front, top side of the airbox. you might be able to see it. if you can't, you'll have to take the airbox loose and get everything straight under there.

there's a link explaining it, otherwise theres lots of resources available if you search for "zx7r kleen air mod" or "zx7r airbox mod"

Hope you get that beast going!

Hey thanks for the help. After many times taking it apart and putting it back it is now running great. The previous owner did some sort of kleen air mod but it think it had a leak somewhere and I must have found it by taking it all apart.

Thanks again
