I own a 2003 and it looks like it has 1/4 inch spacer between the top of the shock and where it mounts to the frame. Would this be added on or would that be normal configuration right from the factory?

Sounds like it was added to me. I'm 6'0 and I wanted the raise the rear to get a better turn in on the bike. I have 2 spacers that's 1/2 in. The only problem with that is you will tend to get more head shakes at higher speeds. But it feels better to me. I would leave it the way it is.

if you are talking about the round "washer" looking spacer, that IS stock oem on the 02/03 models. spacers/shims may also be added to increase tail/seat height. track guys like it because they can effectively change how qwikly the 9R will turn-in without messing up the suspension (especially preload).

why would kawa have a stock shim? can someone explain this? is it to give it a sharper feel or what? this does induce headshake as Rad said, which seems like something a "big 4" mgf. would want to avoid...
