Ive read some people who have attached additional fans with on and off switches. Modified the temp sensors so they fans kick on at lower temps and things like that. Anybody attempt or done any mods to get the temp on these engines down? Man riding in the summer and around town the heat is killing me.

ive been thinking the same thing. im going to look into putting a zx10 fan on my zx6r. at the same time im wondering whether or not that will cool the motor down to the point were its affecting running temp. trying to get back on post ive gotten my bikes temp to say high :banghead, so ive gotta figure something out.

With it being 100+ degrees outside mine runs mid 180's to low 190's depending on traffic/speed. The fan doesn't kick on till around 210-215 so I'm going to say that's a safe operating temp.

If it was too hot for the engine they would have the fan come on sooner.

You just need to ride faster.

Yeah my fan only comes on when I'm either in a traffic jam (lane splitting isn't legal here) or at a stop light.

I mean you can put more fans on if you want, but it's up to you.

It shouldn't be getting that hot. You have something wrong.

I've never seen mine get past 214.

I don't know how they are wired, but I'm sure they used a relay to power them. As long as the wiring is big enough and the fuse is large enough to support the extra current you could put a second fan on it and tap it into the stock fan and it should run both.

And having 2 fans will help it cool faster. More air moving through the radiator means more heat being taken from the coolant.

If I was going to put a second fan on mine I'd probably put a second sensor in and have it turn on at a lower temp, like 195 or so. That way you have a 2 stage fan setup so you are still only running one fan unless it gets really hot.

Well it works kinda like the 2 fan setups on cars. One runs when the A/C is on to keep airflow through the condenser and helps cool the engine a little, but when it gets hot the engine fan kicks in and you pull more air through the radiator to cool the engine down.

IIRC our fans only cover about half the radiator if that. (I've never paid attention to it) so adding a second to the other side will do nothing but help.

I mean when they aren't on it will hinder airflow a LITTLE but not enough to notice anything.

hmm very good points...alright so for a cheap start to this engine cooling experiment i think im simply gonna heat wrap my headers, heat from the headers will obviously get trapped within the blockade of fairings, engine, and radiator. so theres a good possibility that wrapping the headers could have a slight effect on heat management.

But will also allow your header to rust faster.

Well the wrap can trap moisture in next to the pipe and hold it there for longer than it would run off. So it will accelerate the process quite a bit. But it will still take years before they rust through.

Nope. Everyone swears it lowers your engine temps a little. I don't really see the point though because I have a fan to control that. I don't want my engine running too cool on the highway.

i just did a mod like this on my bike last week.

i went to the auto parts store picked up a in-line fuse, some 10gauge wire, and a toggle switch.

on the plug that hooks up to the fan there are two wires. one is hot (i think the blue one?) just splice into that then hook up the switch and the other end of the wire goes to the positive battery post. took about 40 minutes gotta pull the tank/seat and the left side farings.

when the switch is off the fan works normally. when you flip that switch it comes on.

probably prettier/better ways to do it but this works. i flip it on at long stop lights never see the temp above 200 now.

I see alot of people getting some use out of this thread which is good! I know our bikes are designed for a purpose to run hot I believe I was told it was better for emissions I dont remember but damn when its like high 90's or triple digits here and I get stuck at lights or in traffic its a bitch! Its bad enough Im wearing a leather jacket at that! Theres been times where when the fan kicks on I can feel the heat on my legs really bad!

As people stated theres number of ways of doing this. I was thinking of going with a seperate fan for the right side which I believe there is a mount but Ill have to double check and have that hooked up directly to a toggle switch where I can turn on during traffic and stops and turn off when Im riding again. Thats sort of the direction Im thinking of going. I actually found a posting somewhere else where a guy added resisters and spliced it into the wirings and was able to have the fan kick on at a lower temp. But that goes back to Im sure there was a reason why these damn bikes are made to run the temps they do. :headscratch

I dont think the bikes are made to run temp that high for lonng period of time, once you start moving the temp will go down unless you are going at a snail pace, those bikes are made to go fast so temp wont rise as high as when you stop at traffic light.
the ffan switch or double fan switch is an awesome idea, will keep looking at this thread.
