does it blow much smoke?

i would try spraying the headers down with brake cleaner and see what happens after a 100 miles.

for the record, i have NEVER owned a bike that looked like that. and my yamaha fzr400 had some blow-by.

nope, doesn't blow any smoke.
questions:
1) am i correct in assuming that the purpose of brake cleaner is to clean that crap off the exhaust headers?
2) what am i looking for after the 100 miles, to see if it happens again?

A solution of simple green may work also to remove the "stain" I'd try that and then look again as suggested. I thought you'd be seeing it smoke also. I was thinking new piston rings initially. I am no mech. though.
Might try checking the torque on bolts there also? Be interested to hear your findings.

if you're getting blow by why don't you just replace the gaskets...

it's easy - should take you about 30 mins (lazy time).

cleaned the exhaust headers and 100+ miles later, they are still clean. my mechanic adjusted the carbs (b/c of a previous problem) and that fixed both problems i was having.
