(wall o text incoming)

So like I said in the newcomer thread. Just got my first bike Red 2003 ZX6R.

For the most part this bike will be used to ride back and forth from work which I live in the same town as so not on the freeway daily.

Quick trips and what not my friend also just got a bike so I am sure we will go out on rides into the canyons though at some point.

I tried to post some pics but for some reason it always says my pictures exceed the limit even though I have sized them down to tiny.

I have a lot of little questions concerning just the basics -

Gear first off because I want to ride it as soon as possible. I know I need a helmet, gloves, jacket, and boots. Budget varies. Need like mid weight stuff or something sometimes its cold sometimes it hot as hell in Utah...prob need to buy 2 sets of gear or something but not enough money for that.

Helmet - I was thinking of getting the Scorpion EXO-1000. A couple of shops around me had some and they run pretty small I tried on the XXL which everything else I tried I wore a XL and it was still kind of tight around the sides of my face.

I was trying to spend 200 or less on a helmet so if anyone has other suggestions I would be open. My friend got a HJC CL-16 I think it was and it fits but im not a huge fan cause it fogs up a bit when I wear it.

NOW I also tried on a Shoei RF-1100 which was awesome. But if I buy that its going to hinder my purchase of the other pieces. But maybe yall can help me save money in those places.

Gloves - No idea I tried on some Cortech Accelerator 2.0 and they felt good they were about 65 bucks not sure though

Boots - I found some clearance ICON boots that go past my ankle at a bike shop for super cheap and my size so I picked em up.

Jacket - This I am having a hard time with. I found a Fieldsheer super sport 2.0 which seems nice had a liner so it would be a bit warmer not but I could zip it out when it warms up outside but its around $185.

I really like the look of leather but in my price range I didnt see much. There was some Vulcan brand stuff on Amazon in the 200 range but idk of the quality. So it might be better to get the textile and save up for the leather one.

Pants - This I really dont know I figured I wear a pair of jeans but I just read a thread about riding jeans. So now I am considering those. Saw some Drayko's that didnt look bad I really like the look of the Hornee Jeans but no idea where to buy them in the USA.

Alright I think thats about it for the basic gear questions sorry for having so many I got the bike off of Craiglist so I didnt get to spend to much time with a vendor learning things.

Any basic things I need to know about maintaining the bike? How often do you change the oil? Other fluids I need to watch?

The guy I got it from said he tried to clean the chain every 400 or so miles and advised to get a grunge brush and some Bel-Ray chain cleaner and Lube.

I figure I need to wash and wax it often to keep the paint in good shape. I have it in a carport so its not completely closed off from the elements but it does have a couple walls protecting it.

Anything I should buy for the bike to make it better or whatever for me? It has a Two Brothers exhaust, Fender Eliminator, Front blinkers are flush mounted, and these large metal ends on the handle bars that are suppose to reduce vibrations he said. It also has the tank protector on it already and some frame sliders.

I was thinking I should buy one of those rear tire stands for it so the bike isnt on the kick stand all the time...I keep thinking its going to fall over... idk why maybe im paranoid.

SOOOOOOOOOOOO....excited to be on the forums! Sorry for the wall o text feel free to give me any ideas that I didnt think to ask.... I am sure I will think of more after I post this anyways.

First bike? Buy a cheaper helmet. You will probably not be used to handling the things and will probably drop it a bunch. I know I did.

If you are looking for a slick ass carbon fiber, super comfortable lightweight helmet, look into Zoan helmets.

http://www.zxforums.com/forums/general-discussion/59404-zoan-helmets.html

$250 gets you the CF, but they have a bunch of other types for a lot less. Just a suggestion of course. I love mine.

If I were you I would find the owners manual for that bike, probably available free online, and have a quick read.

just noticed that helmet 170 bucks Icon Domain 2 anyone know how that helmet is? I havent seen any Icon helmets at shops around me do they fit tight like scorpion or more normal if compared to HJC?

Or is the EXO-1000 a better helmet? The 1000 RPM has some pretty good prices on some sites. Im not a huge fan of the graphic but I could get over it to save money.

This site actually has some decent prices on leather so maybe I can afford some anyone know about the quality of these jackets and how hot they are going to be?

photobucket for pics
great that you're trying on gear.
Check out Cycle gear for deals on mesh Jackets right now. You can find some nice ones for about $!00.
BTW, I like CG. great for returning things.
Check out my thread on riding jeans.

Hard to say exactly what you should get. Fitment is the first priority.
I started out with inexpensive stuff to see what works for me.
Welcome!

I guess Ill just keep editing this post with gear I find I actually might be able to get all my gear off this site if yall think its any good here are 2 gloves ive found

http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/sport/motorcycle+gloves/icon_arc+leather+gloves
http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/...ccelerator+series+2+perforated+leather+gloves

And some jeans - Anyone know if these fit a bit tight or they are a normal fit?

http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/sport/kevlar+motorcycle+jeans/shift_torque+jeans
http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/sport/kevlar+motorcycle+jeans/drayko_drift+riding+jeans+
http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/...le+jeans/alpinestars_axiom+kevlar+denim+pants
http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/...eans/icon_strongarm+2+reinforced+denim+jeans+

I like the first 3 the most the Axiom looks the most normal but they also almost look like skinny jeans which likely wont fit me well. The Torque jeans look the most comfortable but the Drayko's look great as well.

edit: Ah thanks for that. I should prob invest in some leather pants at some point but as I learn just around town I think the jeans might be just right for me. I am actually surprised with my Cart it is coming out to less then I thought it would be right now this is what I have in there -

http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/hot+deals/home+page+street/icon_arc+leather+gloves
http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/hot+deals/home+page+street/shift_torque+jeans

So two pairs of gloves right now if anyone has any opinions between the two? And how about the jackets between that pack I listed up there.... Helmet im not 100% on either if I go cheaper then the Shoei for my first helmet would the EXO-1000 or the Icon Domain 2 be the better choice. Ugh soooo excited to get this stuff and be able to start riding around.

edit: I dont know if it would be worth it but if the leather is going to be really hot then it might be worth getting both a leather and a textile jacket. They have this one for only 100-120 bucks and even with that I and the other gear I have chosen I am still with in my limits on my budget for gear.

http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/sport/textile+motorcycle+jackets/pokerun_eagle+2.0+textile+jacket

And after reading some reviews on those gloves I am not sure if they are the right choice out of those 2 I think the Cortech would be the better choice though.

The first pair of gloves are really basic. Not much protection.
I would go for the tourmasters. Still fairly basic but I use similar ones for riding around town.
Better gloves will start around $100.

Can't say much about jeans since I'm in the same situation. I just ordered a pair of jeans and mesh pants.
I already have leather pants but they're too hot here for the summer.

Gloves all fit differently too so be careful. Helmets are the worse for getting a good fit.

once again, work with a good website/company that will take returns without charging for restocking or shipping etc.

Ah yes I was also just realizing that on the gloves as well. What do you think about the leather jackets I posted? To hot? I did try on some scorpions and HJC's and a Shoei at the dealer so I know the sizes of those that fit. But ya there is many many brands on helmets. I also tried on those gloves at a dealer store as well. I am gonna go check out cyclegear right now though.

i say MSF first - they will have a mandatory helmet, gloves, hightop shoes/boots expected from you. Will teach you plenty info about motorcycle basics.

and i'll sum up your questions to a more simple answer.
Riding is a hobby, and once treated as one makes you a better rider. Like any hobby, it will cost so purchase the best stuff your wallet can afford.

for gear, the industries best in my opinion are usually arai helmet and alpinestars jacket, boots, gloves, pants, suits. Of course there are comparable items but thats up to you to try out.

I dont necessarily want a 100 dollar helmet I would like to have a little extra build quality and Ventilation. Unless of course the 700 series S and S helmet is of equal quality im not opposed to saving money but I also dont want to buy something now thats not very good when I could have spent 50-100 bucks extra and had something I would be willing to keep for a while.

Alright how about these gloves over the Cortech's

http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/...pinestars_octane+s-moto+leather+gloves+-+2010

How do the Bell helmets compare to the Scorpion and Icon helmets?

http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/sport/motorcycle+helmets/bell_rs-1+helmet+-+victory+

Or the Suomy helmets

They are pretty much the same just different features, like the scorpion brand they all ptetty much feel equal just have different vents and details, I had a shoei, scorpion, and z1r, shoei and scorpions are good, z1r was my firat it cost me like $75 but I lost weight after it was broken in and it didnt fit that good, my next might be an s&s they look and feel as good as the scorpion they are about the same in price, one thing you gotta remember is just because its a famous brand doesnt mean its better, that cheap z1r had a higher safety rating than most expensive brands back in '05, sometimes the reason for the cheap price could be the totem pole effect, new model come out the older model gets bumped down in price, doesnt mean is a bad lid

Ordered all my gear so hopefully it will be here sometime this week.

Also would it be worth it to purchase a rear tire stand for the bike? Is it best to store it on the stand rather then the kick stand? Or is the point to have it for when I need to do work on it.

Yes. If you can get a deal where you can get both the front and rear that is good too. I got lucky and got both off of CL. Just keep looking for those as well.

Stands are great if you're going to let your bike sit for any length of time or doing service work like cleaning and lubing the chain.
I have a couple sets of T-rex stands. Not sure of their pricing now but you could get front and rear with rear spools for about $140.

Are the spools something you put on and never take off usually or only put on for using the stand?
