Got the bike together enough to start her up and see how she does idling on the stands.
I have all the electrical connected, new plugs, fresh oil and coolant and 2 gallons of 93 oct gas.
Fully charged battery.
So, the bike cranks very nicely and then POW, backfire.
That's all it does.
Over the winter I split the cases to fix my 2nd gear issue.
I haven't even touched anything else in the top or bottom end.
Any ideas?
this is horribly frustrating.

FCRs.

You may want to put the CVs back on for the time being.

Check the plug wires to make sure they were put back on right. I've screwed up a firing order before.

the fcr's are pouring fuel out.
i am checking the timing, but it looks to be in time as it sits; like i said i didn't touch the top end or bottom end.

I checked plug wires last night, coil 1 is 1 and 4 and coil 2 is 2 and 3; left to right order.

Just guessing since I'm not familiar with your bike but a loud backfire, assuming out the exhaust, would be an indication of timing 180* off.
Wouldn't you have to disconnect something with the cam or crankshaft gears in order to split the cases?

No, case splits between top and bottom; crank and bits stay in top, gearbox comes out bottom.
I checked the timing and its dead on.
Turned out the leads on the coils were switched.... one coil uses red and green and the other black and red. Red is the ground, green and black are power. Coils have green and black terminals on them. Very easy to incorrectly install.
So, swapped the wires between them and pow, fires right up.
She's alittle lean in the carbs yet, but I'm going to see what I can do.
Vids and pics will be my thread in the zx9 forum on here.
Thanks for the help; glad it was something simple.
