Discovered it had stupid led taillights bulbs so swapped them for proper bulbs, still doesnt work but the side lights no longer come on with the brakes. So thats a plus i guess.
ive got power to the fuse from the switch. When i pull the fuse the dash lights go out. Swapped the fuse box and that made no difference.
im guessing the issue is someplace between the fuse box and the lights, ive just no idea on how to find it or cure it

So i got up this morning and went and checked the bike, just in case the magic pixies had sorted it overnight.
turns out they have visited but i must have upset them, the indicators have stopped working overnight

Well its beat me, phone the auto electrician today and he is coming at the end of the month.
that gives me time to do all the rest of the little bit to get it on the road early next month, hopefully.
all fluids need replacing, new rear tyre and a set of indicators. Apart from that i need to get the fairings lined up and sitting properly. Fit the chain and run new fuel lines.
i got the hole in the fuel tank fixed, melted solder into it a week ago and filled with fuel, left it-sitting on paper it seems to be sealed

Great news on the tank! I am sorry about your wiring issues. If I wasnt on the other side of the pond...
Any progress just means one less thing to worry with and one step closer to your goal. I'm really enjoying your build and looking forward to more post.
Cheers mate,
Hans

I'm enjoying watching this come together, and learning from it, too. Keep it up Pyke, you're almost there!
This auto spark has got his work cut out. Its just not sorting the J out and charging me £65 for the privilege and a cup i tea. Ive got a issues with my L model as well. Theres a broken wire someplace as the dash and tail light flicker. Im also gonna get him to check the spare 9R loom that i need if i ever go 900 for the J.
im a stone mason and average hourly rate for me is half his. He is not doing ten minutes work and getting an hours wage. Thats not happening, sorry mate youve got to earn your money on this one.

I’m glad you’re making progress and getting so close on this one. I can’t wait to see it finished.

On the road and finished are going to be two different things. It really needs painted but ive spent about what its worth getting this far, painting it would push me well into negative equity.
its done 60K miles so its never going to be a big money bike.

Today i managed to cut the bottom out of the battery tray, removed about an inch in height and plastic melted it back into place. Bleed the rear brake, stupid underslung brembo calliper needs to be removed and held at the top of the disc to bleed.
i also changed the oil and filter. Tomorrow i will fit the radial master cylinder and bleed the front brakes. Ive ordered a oem copy brake lever to match the clutch side. I really dont like stubby levers. When i grab a handful of brakes i want a full handful not a couple of fingers worth.
Ive been part of many builds. Its very seldom that you end up anywhere other than upside down. At the end of the day, its what you think and feel about it that counts. It seems that no matter how well you plan, how much you watch your money. You always take 3 times as long and cost 4-5 times as much. Its really the feeling you take away from it. Years from now, you wont think about the money you spent or lost. Youll look backward really long and hard at the whole build, and run into a parked car. J/K. In the long run, its about knowing what you learned and enjoyed during the process as well as what you take away from it.

Cheers,
Hans

Things ive learned with this build, restorations arent for me, no matter what i can put things back to standard.
It was me t to be a resto buts turned out to be a restomod.

got the nissin radial master on and bleed. That was a chalange, the throttle cable is right in the way but its on and working.

I even used fancy brake fluid, not Ferrari blue drake fluid but still fancy fluid
Liquid Fluid Plastic bottle Gas Drink

im also doing a fluid swap on the clutch system today.
next week ive to get the bodywork on and lined up properly, modify the screen brace to take mirrors and do final checks. Make sure ive tightened everything up and everythings ready for its test. The auto electrician is coming a week on monday and i want to have it ready to test for once he sorts the wiring.

It's great to see that you've come along this far. It seems like to me that you've only got the wiring to get sorted and bodywork. What are you going to do with that 9r motor?

Ive got 3 9R engines sitting and 2 zxr’s.
1st 9 engine doesnt like to start. Ive done the valve shims on it and it has compression. Dont think the head gasket has gone on it but it wont start from cold even woth the +4 advancer
2nd 9 engine starts on the button even without choke from cold but only runs on 3 and the head gasket has gone. Ive done the shims on it and still running on 3. Who ever was in it before me assembled it with silicone for gaskets
At some point i may try and rebuild them or at least rebuild one out of the two. Both heads have the number 1 stamped on them and the carbs take the smaller thread jet size same as the 750’s carbs thread size. I think this puts them around 94/95 production year engines.
the 3rd engine came out of the parts bike and is a 96 production year, no4 stamped on the head and the larger jet thread size that only 96’s had. Its around the 35k miles on it and is untested. It will be shoved into my L to test it. Hopefully its good and i can get the L back up and running.
if this J engine isnt good, its done 60k and hasnt had the easiest of lifes or the best of servicing then one of the 9r motors will go in it.
ive got bad knees and 2 collapsed discs so if its too painful to ride the J will be going to fund something more upright. Im far to invested in the L to sell it.

Its been a few years since i last rode a bike, the J is a bit slower than my L so im thinking it will be easier to get me back up to speed on it. If i can ride it without to much pain ten one day i might put the 9 engine in it. Ive got the loom and carbs to do it. If its too painful to ride any distance it will go to fund my next build. I never planned on buying or building it, just happened to be offered it at a price to good to say no to.
next build im thinking will be a z750/1000 (kz in america) late 70’s early 80’s with more modern wheels and suspension, ive got a full set from the 9R including swingarm. Since the engine is a older 8V i think it will end up with a suzuki bandit 1200 engine in it. Seems a popular swap or is here in the uk.
since old zed’s are expensive my other option is going to the dark side and buying a gsx750ef. There still reasonbly cheap and easy to modify.
if istick with kawasaki i also have a idea for a gpz900r or ninja 900r if your stateside. Basically 10R forks and wheels with a zzr1000c engine and carbs etc. i really like the look of whats coming out of japan for these bikes.

Did you get the ohlins on the bike? Some plush suspension might help with comfort/pain. My rear needs to be replaced, bumps on the highway launch me 😔

The ohlins is going on my L model. Its got a rsv swingarm on it and really reduces my options on shocks.
the J has a zx6r showa shock from a 2015 model and a zx7r shock linkage. Hopefully once its set up i can live with it. Its more the riding position i think im going to have issue with, hadnt thought about the rear shock giving me an issues to be honest
The rubber thing in the rocker cover for the timing chain, its name escapes me.
is it important?
mine is in 2 half’s, ive seen contradicting advice. Can i just grind the pegs off and forget about it?
or should i borrow one out of another engine?
