I bought the bike with a straight pipe on it because the last owner was an idiot.

I just bought a Yoshimura RS-5 slip on and I thought I put it on correctly last night, then today when I was at the DMV I saw that the pipe was completely disconnected and loosened from what I thought was a tight fit.

Can you give me advice how to properly install this? I tightening the clamp a lot and it worked for a second, then the pipe came out, and I even bent the metal from tightening so hard.

I must be doing something wrong.

You may need some kind of shim. I need to shim my Muzzy - and it is the one that came with the header.

you may have overtightened it. bending the metal from tightening can reduce the friction needed for proper fitment.

Oh fuck, is the female male thing wrong. Don't know how to word it. But was the Yoshimura pipe supposed to slip OVER the pipe, or inside of it.

Hard to tell on the angle, but it looks like the flow is right to left. The mid-pipe's outlet diameter is matched to the slip-on's inlet diameter, whatever diameter that turns out to be. It sounds like you figured it out on your own. It definitely looks reversed and that, by definition, would be incorrect. An exhaust pipe's outlet diameter must either be static from beginning to outlet or increase as it makes its way to the outlet. Diameter restrictions can bottleneck exhaust gas flow.

The left pipe is the Yoshi, and the right side is stock downpipe. Are you saying the Yoshi should fit AROUND the stock downpipe?

i don't think its going to fit around the down pipe. might have to get some of that mesh stuff between the two

I think you need the proper sleeve, (looks like it's made of some type of lead/graphite material), between the oem pipe and the new slip-on. I ran into a similar issue with an LOR slipon on a 10R. Just didn't look right or fit right. when I reinstalled the sleeve taken from the oem pipe, everything slipped together perfectly.

The mesh wont fit right, it's all frayed and gets clogged and stuck. I should probably just go to home depot and find something.

So just for clarification, I SHOULD be using that mesh filler?

If so, what kind should I buy?

i believe the "mesh thing" is basically a gasket, so to speak, to you dont have any exhaust leaks. forgot to put mine in the first time too, then i had to take everything apart and reinstall. but im almsot 100% the mesh peice is your problem

The alternative to using a gasket would be to take it to a muffler shop and have them use an exhaust pipe expander on the end. Similar to:
