Hi forum, I recently got a 1986 ninja 1000r. It was working great till this morning. When i try to crank it over it has a grinding noise mixed with a crackling noise. But If I try to crank it over two or three times it'll eventually grab on and turn the engine and start. what could be the problem?

Yeah I figured. I bought a new starter and battery but i continued to happen. Im guessing a bad gear? I took one of the side covers and I believe under the clutch should be some gears. I don't have the manual to show me how to remove the clutch. Could someone point me in a direction. Thanks :D

If you pull out the starter you should see the idle gear. It should turn counter-clockwise freely. It should not turn clockwise. If it makes noise or acts differently then you may be splitting the crankcase. Ouch! Sorry may have steered you in the wrong direction earlier. I hope thats not the problem. FYI, there are 2 manuals for this bike. A GPZ 900 plus the zx1000 supplemental.
