Just received a solo tail from a pretty cool guy up in New York. He was nice enough to ship it down to me after I contacted him through C/L. It’s an oem tail that needs a little love but we’ll get it there.

Very Nice!

Given these were fiberglass from the factory how do you identify a 'stock' K solo tail?

I have 3 of them sitting here 2 of which I believe are OEM. They still have the internal foam in exactly the same spots. The 3rd I was told was aftermarket but the only way I think I could diferentiate is by having the tail sit right next to the originals.

Great find Honda, you'll definitely "get it there" as you said. Awesome that you're going to save another original tail.

I found a pristine race team takeoff a few years ago, paid $500, and then- UPS did their best/worst... Hammered hard and cracks aplenty so I kept it for $100 and it will probably take another $500 to fully sort it out. Wish you were local.

ALSO- CABINETS! Don't know if you finished your shop and hung them up yet but still totally curious to check them out installed.

Cabinets not hung yet. Holding off on shop thinking of getting a bigger house now. I have another 92 K that’s missing parts so I really needed the tail. Told the guy I bought it off of about the forum so we might have a new member with a J model lurking around. I’d like to see a photo of the race team tail for sure for sure.

I fully concur, the cabinets are in fact so sick they truly deserve a much bigger, better, badder lab to be installed in. Like your thinking there.

Hope your parts buddy does decide to join the forum as we need new members with builds to keep things going and interesting. Several of the other forums have really slowed up as of late which makes no sense in spring.

Re the race tail, no amigo, it's a stocker that looks well, just like your cabinets... with a total of 11 miles use on it from the dealership to the shop in '92 where it was boxed up and replaced by a full set of race bodywork. Mint. That's why I was so pissed when OOPS mashed the hell out of it, I just knew it was all just too good to be true. At first the neighbors were a little put off and confused as to why I was on my knees in the driveway, cradling an abused box, screaming FAAAHHHHHHHHHKKKKKKK!!!!

Then they got it. Beers were later delivered in consolation. Kind folk.

Looking forward to how yours turns out though.

Had some time to strip the tail down. Here’s some photos where you can see all the different colors it’s been and the original white,green and blue.

Ok first thing I want to tackle on the tail is the missing lower section below the tail light. With that piece missing it’s real weak and flimsy.
Going to start by molding a piece of metal to the shape I want and attach it to the outside of the tail.

This is the basic shape I needed just have to trim down the final fit.

Putting a little mold release on the metal parts just so the fiberglass will pull away easy

Marked my tail off where I want my patch to line up to.

Now ready to put my panel on. Just lining it up and putting on with tape. I want it to be able to remove it easy.

Now it’s time to lay out some fiberglass. Putting the fiberglass mixed with resin on the inside up against the metal bracket. After it’s dry I’ll remove the bracket and grind the fiberglass then lay more glass down on the outside.

Couple photos of the fiberglass with the metal brace removed.

Then I flipped it over and ground down the fiberglass so I could lay some on the outside of the panel.

Ground down the fiberglass on the outside. I didn’t think it was strong enough yet so I laid some more on. If you want to do it the same as I did don’t put enough Hardener in the mix. That way when you come in the next day you can spend an hour cleaning up that mess. I also took an 1/8 inch drill bit and at the end of any crack drilled a hole to stop the cracks from traveling any further. Ground the inside where the cracks were and laid some more glass down. Just have to finalize around the seat pad where the lock goes. Then I can start to straighten the outside.

Got the area where the lock goes dialed in and some straightening done on the outside. Doing the first primer coats just to see where I’m at with it.

Dialed in the rest of the straightening after I primed. Then I primed it again and sanded it down with 600 grit sand paper. Then three coats of white and three coats of pearl, little clear and the first part of the paint job is done.

Got the blue dialed in. Hard color I’ve worked on this color a few times in the past finally got a mix I’m happy with where it is close to factory and the stickers on the side plastic.

The next step will be to sand it all down and put a couple coats of clear over the whole tail. Have to order some billboard decals to finish it off.
