Im running the 35w and am totally pleased with the results.

Im afraid that if I go to a 55w the folks in front of me will start flicking me off in their mirror as my laser beam of a headlight gives them a tan on their necks.... :crackup

I already am getting some looks from them...

Considering that wattage is actually a measurement of heat output (light output is lumens) and standard headlight wattage is 55/60 anyway, there should be no problem so long as your electrical connections are correct and tight.

I would like to see some verification on that, but it makes sense "kind of". An HID outputting the same amount of light will use 50% less power, and run WAY cooler than a halogen light. However, an HID running at the same wattage (electrical wattage, not heat) would put out A TON more light, and have comparable heat.

So, AFAIK it is in fact an electrical measurement, but 55W cant possibly create more heat AND light than a halogen. One or the other, sure.

Either way, I have never heard of anyone actually melting a headlight housing with a 55w HID kit that wasnt already melting it with a stock bulb.

Sweet, Xenonrider told me that if I ever want to upgrade to the 55w all I have to do is buy the 55w ballast.... I can use everything I already have....

Watts is a measurement of energy as Masta states (most commonly used in electricity, but could be any type of energy) so a 55 Watt standard bulb uses (dissipates) the same total energy as a 55 Watt HID light. The sum of all that energy is put out as heat and light. It makes some sense that the HID light will put out less heat if it putting out more light. Just as a comparison, a liter class bike engine puts out roughly 100,000 Watts.

i have heard from multiple people that the 55w runs hotter especially in a smaller lamp housing, ie it could possibly melt the headlamp housing. now that being said, i haven't ever seen them do that, but i do know when i installed them in my cars fog lamps that halogen and hid both were very very hot to the touch of the lamp lens. i would putt 55 in my next replacement. if any issue arise i would deal with them then. good luck buddy

Yeah, but who is multiple people?

That is the common perception because HIDs are so much brighter that "they must be super effing hot man".

Considering you have a 50-60 watt lamp in there stock, there is no way you can have a 55 watt HID putting out more heat AND light than a stock bulb. One or the other, not both. The laws of physics don't allow for it.

If you are putting a 55w HID into a fog light that only maybe ran 30 watts stock... then yes, problems.

I was playing with an hid set. the light was on and I accidentally touched the bulb with the side of my finger just briefly. Ouch !! Instant burn and a blister raised shortly after. Halogens are super hot also. I haven't been stupid enough to touch one of those yet.

Yeah, because super hot, and super mega fucking ultra hot are really easy to tell apart.

Just like using a butt dyno, highly accurate lol

I'll shoot my buddies bike that has 55w with a temp gun and shoot one from halogen light. That will settle the heat discussion right?
Only if its a 55w halogen too.

Yea it will be. I'd like to know 100% operating temps of both. I forgot to mention that it hasn't melted his housing. At least not yet lol. I say that caz we put them in close to the end of summer so most riding we did was under 70 degrees F

Also bb6 u should consider taking the lens off and putting projector lens in there and doing the 35w bulbs. Rode with a set up like that and it was much nicer than a 55w hid in reflectors. Projectors cleaned it up super nice without a blinding light. 55w hid bulbs in reflectors is pointless when I rode. Too much wash out light and it just pisses ppl off and blinds everything. More or less he put his in just to say he had brighter bulbs but with reflectors I'd take 35w bulbs any day. Even
With projector lens 35w is the way to go.

Dont know why there is a debate going on. I personally never had 55w kits, i have had a 35w 8000k kit from ddum tuning in my zx6r for almost 3 years now, not a single problem. I am however dropping down to a 6000k bulb so i dont get the blueish haze.

Heres some pics of it.

Can't read?

:headscratch

The debate is over whether or not 55w HIDs will melt a stock headlight housing. Which you apparently have never used.

Whether or not they work correctly with reflectors is moot.
