I searched and found that a normal operating temp should be around 180 or so... We had some 45* weather today and went out for a 15-20 mile ride... My temps at best were 155 usually 140-145... I was not being hard on the bike sub 5k area on tach light throttle... I was under the impression the thermostat would help control the temp of the bike... Is 45 just too cold for this bike?

strange that the motor would run 140 with a 180* thermostat... Where is the thermostat located on this generation? I can run the bike at idle and check to see if its stuck open... The bike currently only has 2k on the clock and I would rather not cause excessive wear

Perhaps "warm up" the bike? Let it warm up after you start it then purposely rev it so that it gets "hot" around the 180* range. I'm used to the old bikes that are normally hot no matter the temp outside. :crazyloco

I always warm up the bike; no i dont rev it cold but thats awesome info and great advice. I hope everyone else on here has such genius responses.

After It warms to proper temp around 170ish, I hit the road it quickly drops to 140-145 ish

my 6R does this too, itsgot to do with ambient temps, and the fact that coolant is always flowing because the thermostat has a little hole to pass SOME coolant while closed. remember what a cooling system's purpose is. to COOL the motor. apparently yours is highly efficient.

Just seems like a bad call for kawi to let the bike run at a low temp like that... I didnt know about the constant flow; though I thought it was acting like an open system. Seems like a good thing for hot days and lots of traffic though. Just so long as the motor can run without damage at that temp its all good...

140 does seem low to me. Even my old zx9 running in high 30s and low 40 degree weather never fell below 155 once it was warmed up. My newer bike doesn't fall under 170 once it gets there.

Surely someone with the same generation zx10 will speak up here soon. If not, you could PM Blue. He has an 08 and lives in Canada, so he should know what temp it should run in cold weather:smile

Let it idle in the garage for 5 minutes to warm up the oil.
Then go ahead and ride it keeping in mind the tires are cold and also need to warm up a little. The biike will prob settle around 160 degrees if ridden moderately. If you keep the motor at 7 grand, it will get up to 180.

I don't like riding when it's below 50 degrees.
I'm a Florida boy, though.

140's are not too low or anything to be concerned about at all. Especially in 45* weather and only riding for 15 miles...

My 2008 zx-10r runs at that temperature in cold weather too. My 2004 Zx-6r did as well. There is nothing wrong with 140's when you're doing short easy rides in really cold weather.

Kawasaki sportbikes are cold blooded, they run colder than any other other sportbike. At least from my experience anyway.

Don't worry about it, ride and enjoy.
