Never had the right side fairing off my '09 6R. Besides three screws up top and three to the lower fairing, how does it latch into the upper cowl? I don't want to muscle it off if there are hidden tabs.

If you're just talking about the lower piece

1. Remove (3) 4mm bolts on top
2. Remove (1) 4mm bolt by rear set
3. Remove push in tab directly behind front wheel and under the radiator
4. Remove tab in the center-front, under the bike, which connects the two lower (left and right) pieces together
**Fairing should now be completely free of everything except the top fairing.**
5. Pull it up from the bottom and pull /wiggle it out. There is a 'L' tab on the lower fairing that somewhat 'locks' it to the upper fairing

It should take no pressure to remove it. If you feel like you're having to muscle anything, you're doing it wrong.

Hope that helps.

I guess I wasn't clear, not the lower fairing but the right side mid-fairing, IPC refers to it as the side cowl I believe.

I got Tboned last week at an intersection and ordered a new mid-fairing or side cowl to replace the old damaged one. My concern is how it locks into the top cowling. Nothing in the OM on removing this fairing. I checked messages and not showing anything in there.

Not sure what piece you're referring to then...the small little black piece by the gas tank / instrument panel?

OK, there are three fairings visible in this right side view, starting from the top, top cowl with headlights, mid fairing (the one I busted) with Ninja on it and the lower fairing on very bottom which I changed from original black to green. That mid fairing slots into the top cowl somehow, tabs or something.

Sorry, unable to retrieve that link, my PMs are disabled for dome reason. I tried to change that mid fairing earlier today and it is a PITA.

Looks like there are at least three selftapping screws up in there at the top, plus a 10pm hex head bolt.

I could reach the 10 mm bolt and one of the screws with a stubby phillips but the last two I can't even see.

May have to remove the black plastic splash shield on the bottom of the top cowl and try to get my hand back in there.

This is the worst design I've seen yet for fairing replacement.

Ya i can relate, there is a part of the from fairing on my 87 ZX750 that I have removed every visible fastener and tried wiggling etc. and I never did figure out how to remove it. I ended up just masking around it and painting it on the bike. And I am an engineer that has taking things apart and putting them back together for about 36 years...

I've never actually separated that piece. I'd imagine you have to take the whole front end off though.

Maybe this will help

Yup, wish I'd seen that before, confirms that the entire front end is designed to come off as a unit, both side fairings along with the upper cowl.

Unfortunately, I took off just the right side, left the top cowl and left side fairings on and it was a bastige!

Here's the problem, you can see the three towers up inside the upper cowl with self-tapping sheet metal screws installed from the inside. This is after I removed the side fairing. There is almost no room to get in there with a screw driver. Look at the bottom one, it almost touches the headlight shell. I had to remove the inner fairing splash guards and run my hand up in there with an apex phillips bit and a 1/4" wrench to back it out. I don't know how I'm going to get it back in there without pulling the whole front end off.

This is with the right side fairing off of there. You can see the voltage regulator just in front of the coolant reservoir. It bolts to a bracket on the inside of the fairing.
