I just fired up the 07 ZX10R engine that I put in a modified pulling tractor the other day. It fired right up and runs great. I put coolant in the radiator and after running it for a couple of minutes I shut it down, let it cool, and topped off the radiator with more coolant. When I run the engne, it continues to rise in temperature until around 247 when it flashes and then says HI. Of course I immediatly shut it off and let it cool down. The fan comes on at around 207 and stays on but the temp never drops, just continues to rise. I am thinking that maybe since the motor has been sitting with no fluid for about 6 months that maybe the thermostat is stuck open. What do you guys think? I would think that is all it could be. I am not losing any water anywhere, the radiator is staying full. Any opinions??

Not sure what temp they open up at but to see if theres any air in the system do as you said open the cap start it and let it run just put something under it to catch any anti freeze that leaks out

You ca do that but DO NOT let it open or you'll have a big mess. There should also be a bleed valve on the thermostat housing. The T-stat should open between 140-160 i think.

Well maybe it is stuck closed. I left the cap off and let it warm up some. I also applied a small amount of compressed air into the radiator. I could see it move the hose some that goes to the water pump but as soon as I let off it blew back out the radiator opening. The temp continued to rise to about 235 and I shut it off. The hose going to the pump as well as that side of the radiator was still fairly cool to the touch. Any more thoughts?

Sounds like the stat is defective. If you want to test it to make sure.. Take it out and put it in a pot of boiling water. It should open if it's functional.

As for bleeding it. Keep the cap closed and as the temp gets 1/2 way on the gauge open the bleeder screw a little and then close it.
Do that a few times till you get a constant stream of water and no air bubbles.

Let it cool and top it off.

Just to follow up. I was still having some issues with heat. Not over heating or anything, but if I make several pulls back to back, the temps did like to stay up pretty good. I ordered another zx10 fan and installed it on the other side. I wired this fan where it comes on with the ignition and stays on. The other fan still turns on and off with the computer. Wow what a diffenence. No cooling issues now for sure........
