1998 ZX9R overheats after highway

Hello.

Last year I had some overheating-problems so I flushed the coolant-system with one of those “coolant-flush-in-a-bottle” and multiple flushes with fresh water after that.

If I start the bike up in my driveway it goes up in temp, the fan starts and the temp goes down.
When i drive the bike it sits steady at 3-temp-bars.
This points me to believe that water pump, fan and thermostat is working as it should...

But, to get to work I drive on the highway for a good bit then goes straight in to slow traffic in the city. As I approach work the temp rises and when I park the bike, it spits out a bit of water almost every time.
Most of the time the fan starts up, but that does not help - still water on the floor.

Today it was 10-15 degrees celsius, same result.

Any idea what is wrong?
Anything I can try to fix this?

Remember the external tank is an expansion tank so when the bike is cold only have it the lower line.

I fill it between the two lines, as I would on a car. Is that wrong?

New day, same problems.
Drove to work and figured I should let the bike run until the fan shuts of. No problem, the fan start, the temp drops and the fan stops. Then I get a puddle of water on the floor.... 😞

Have you tried replacing the radiator cap?

Does the coolant bubble into the expansion tank, if so lift out the overflow pipe and sniff for exhaust gas fumes, if you can smell exhaust gas fumes then the head gasket needs changing.

I have not changed the cap. Can anyone explain what happens to the old caps? See a lot of people suggesting to change this.

Yes, there are bubbles in the reservoir. To me it seems like the problems is that the way from highway to work is “too short” for the bike to calm down. On my way home I have only had this problem on really hot days.
Could it still be the head gasket?

Where is the collant leaking from? The coolant should never leak. That is what the overflow tank is there for.

The reservoir fills up and coolant leaks from the hose that is connected to the top of the reservoir.

Today it did not leak anything. When cold, the coolant-level is now around the lowest of the two lines. I’ll try it like this for a couple of days.

I looked at eBay yesterday for the cap. Lots for sale are called “high performance”, “high pressure” etc etc.. is there any point in choosing one of those?

My head gasket only leaked into the coolant when I went above 5,000rpm, yours could be different. Like I say next time you’ve had the revs up and it’s bubbling into the expansion tank do the sniff test, you should smell exhaust fumes easy enough.

The spring gets weak or the rubber doesn't seal . Have you bled the system of air ?

The zx9 when on the side stand normally allows any air in the system to get to the radiator cap area, then when the coolant gets hot and expands, it will force the air into the expansion tank and out to atmosphere, then when it cools down it should suck the coolant back from the expansion tank into the radiator.
