99 tranny problems

Hey i am new to this forum thanks to my new (to me) 99 zx9r. I got what I think is a killer deal on this bike which looks to be in good condition...except for the busted tranny. It goes into 1 and 2 no problem, and I can get it into 5 and 6 also. 3 will work if I hold the shift level up. 4 is gone.

From what I have read this sounds like a bent fork, which is consistent with what the owner described (he decided to jam it down a gear on the highway sans clutch).

If youre still reading, thanks... So my questions are 1) is this a job best left to a genuine certified mechanic? 2) how much should I expect to pay for this job? and 3) does anyone know where I can get the best price on new parts? (I'd hate to pay dealer markup if I don't have to).

It all depends on how confident you are in your mechanical skills. 1.) The engine will have to come out and be broken down to get into the tranny. 2.)Check around with some of your local independent shops that may be able to do the work for. 3.) Check ebay for the tranny parts you maybe able to found some fom someone who is parting out a bike or you may want to check out bikebandit.com they sell almost every part for any bike out there.

Do you know what years will have the same parts? Is it just the 98 and 99 models?

I know for sure that 98 and 99 are interchangeable. However I think that the 9R's from 98 to the end of production shared alot of parts that could switch between models but I would check with your local dealer to be sure.

Thanks. I found a shop that said they could fix it for 900-1100. That was the cheapest quote I could get. It was more than I was expecting...so I think I'll be trying this on my own.

I would suggest that you get yourself a shop manual or another type of repair manual that covers your bike before you start pulling it apart. I tend to get haynes manuals for all the bikes I own they give alot of info and the price is right compared to getting a dealer shop manual. Good luck and post up how its coming along.

Thanks I have a shop manual on the way. I think at the very least there will be some work I can do to reduce shop labor...hopefully. I'll let you know where my experience goes.

yeah all depends on where you looking at going. Sometimes its cheaper just buying another motor for about $500 then to repair one for $1,500.
