It's just your tank venting. Nothing to call Dr. Phil about.

It may be a pig, but it's a pig with a rocket in it's ass!

Its the inscreased pressure in the tank.

One way you can make sure its safe is pull the tank and follow the black hose that runs to the bottom of the bike, make sure thats not pinched when the tank is on.

You bike gets hot by the sun... when this happens, the gasoline vapors expand creating an excessive amount of pressure in the tank. This pressure is vented and sounds like a whistling. Bam

Exclamation Be Carefull!!

BE CAREFULL My tank was doing this last summer I thought the same as you guys but I was wrong it was the tank venting but the reason I could here it is because it was not venting right it was coming out around the cap.The vent in the cap was not working and not allowing the tank to vent thus pushing the air out around the cap, eventually backing up and pushing the gas past the fuel pump and flooding the engine through the carbs and down in to the oil.

I fixed this by taking the fuel cap apart and removing the parts that allow the vent to open and close (this is to keep gas from leaking out if the bike gets laid down) I even drilled the hole in the bottom of the cap a little bigger just in case.

Hope this helped it something to check on. I checked by removing the fuel cap and blowing into the hole on the bottom, just make sure you are holding the cap right side up.

Have a look under the fuel cap and you'll see some springs. Give things a push and it should become clear what's happening which is in line with some of the views above....

love it...

if that vent hose from the cap to the spill pan is blocked you could get a vapor lock and it will cause your bike to stall out after riding for a while (my experience about 45mins in the heat). good tip to know and my advice is whenever you raise the tank, when you put it back down blow (don't inhale) into the free end of the vent hose to make sure you're getting good flow. Mine still whistles though but Jet planes and helos whistle when they're cut off too so I guess it's just that badass machines whistle

My girl called me two days ago while I was out of town to tell me that she heard my gas tank making a weird noise, put the phone to it for me to hear. I told her it was venting due to the heat and expansion etc.....she then said "so it's not going to blow up or anything is it?" LOL

this is the difference between FI bikes and carb bikes the venting noise is the bike sucking in air-- this was never heard before on gravity feed bikes with fuel pumps not in the tanks to feed the carbs - the point is the fuel pump is in the tank now and when you tun it off the tank is still under vacuum from pumping fuel to the injectors hence the tank whistle, any help

I made a thread a few weeks ago..."singing gas tank", I know it's normal but mine seemed to do it often..pulled the tank vent line was squished flat from PO I guess. All is good now. No more noise at all.

one of my buddy's with an 07 z1000 kawasaki had his tank to expand and get out of shape on this bike. he attributed this to the failure of the check valve in the gas cap. his tank is messed up and bent from excessive vapor pressure. The fix is to take the latching mechanism apart and remove a round rubber piece where there is a little platic disk about the diameter of a pencil eraser out and then replace everything. no more whistle.
