ZX12 vs ZX14

So which is better/faster?

1882 03-21-2009 04:44 PM

I'm going to go out on a limb here but my guess would be that the 14 gets the nod, but just barely...:smile

jollyroger 03-21-2009 07:24 PM

better/faster

Had a zx12-PCIII,stock except for muzzy trigger advance(4 degree).Quick,fast.Excellent bike-tad buzzy. ZX14-Master,smoother,as quick(handling,acceleration).Better brakes-better bike. More options.More power.:mfclap

snakeman34 03-22-2009 11:22 AM

zx14 zx12 both are WAY BETTER than any Harley(oil leakers)

Shifty1 03-22-2009 11:39 AM

Faster-ZX14. Better-matter of opinion.

ZuluNinja 03-25-2009 01:26 PM

aaaaa this topic always comes up.... to each their own, zx-12 owners are willing to chop off one nut defending their bike's supremacy, while us zx-14 owners grin... who knows? A friend of mine has a 12 and was dying to drag me a quarter almost stock, his only mod being a sawn-off pipe and a slam/stretch. So far it hasn't happenned and my baby got yoshi slip-ons now, but is something I am eager to find out.

BlueBomber14 03-25-2009 06:50 PM

+1 +2

I would only add that my regular riding partner has a 12r with a head kit on it, PC, slammed and stretched 6" and I got him in every respect! Granted I'm slammed and running a PCIII with filter and flies out but even when it was stock I was still taking him everywhere. No dis to the 12 owners I really do like the 12 I think it is one of the best bikes ever made but it is not a match for the 14, Performance wise that is, looks wise I feel like many do that is truely a matter of taste.

RedneckHillbilly 03-25-2009 07:20 PM

Blue....quit teasin the 12 guys and go back to eatin Busas

Ratfink 03-28-2009 07:20 PM

ZuluNinja 03-30-2009 04:48 AM

looks, it's a matter of personal taste; I gotta say, my friend's black 12 dropped and stretched with chrome rims is sure a looker... looks almost as good as my 14! hahahaha

BadWolf88 03-30-2009 07:19 PM

i like a busa better than both, but id probably like a cbr1100xx over them all, you just dont see them any more.

RedneckHillbilly 03-31-2009 06:05 AM

a very smart man once told me "there is no replacement for displacement". sorry 12guys. 14 handsdown

olajoe808 11-26-2017 10:26 AM

HJey guys: Old thread but very relevant. The 14 wins on displacement yes, perhaps refinement among other things, etc. but shave off some of those cubes and what's really underneath.

zx12r
Wet weight: 545 lbs. 91.2 lb-ft at the wheel. 1.24 lb-ft per in3 (73.2in3)

zx14r
Wet weight: 593lbs. 113.2 lb-ft at the wheel. 1.28 lb-ft per in3 (87.9in3)

Difference in torque per in3: .04 lb-ft to the zx14r. At the same displacement (73.2 cu in) of the zx12r this would amount to 93.69 lb-ft (1.28) * 73.2 for an increase over the zx12r by (93.69-91.2)= 2.496 lb-ft. or roughly 3% more

Difference in weight: 8% less goes to the zx12r
At the same weight and displacement of the zx12r the zx14R would have to make (1.08 * 91.2) = 98.496 lb-ft to match the zx12rs power to weight. Therefore at the same displacement as the zx12r, the zx14rs 93.69 lb-ft is (98.496-93.69) = 4.8lb-fts or roughly 5% less.

Although power to weight is usually between hp and weight, here let's use torque. The difference between the two, .03-.05 = -.02 = 2%. Older technology does not equate to less performance

All my #s for both bikes are from wiki.

olajoe808 11-26-2017 11:43 AM

You work hard for your money. Why not get more for it?

Vote ZX-12r for ROTM and get more bang for that buck.

How much more bang? As much as 2% more but who's counting. Vote today. :smile2:

12R-mos beautiful bike ever to come out of KHI. Put the plastic on a Zx=14R chassis. Styling took a hit as technology progressed, IMO.

Noticed you were going on a long ride. Have a save trip and return.

I sure when Kawasaki put the ZX14 out on the market, they said “Here’s our new bigger motorcycle, but it’s slower than its little brother”.

JBear 11-26-2017 01:20 PM

You buy the ZX14 because it's the baddest in town.
You buy the ZX12 because you're the baddest in town.

There ya go.
