1996 ZX1100-E2 Restore or into the Bonfire...

New to the forums here, I came in hunting parts and think Ill stay

I just picked up a 1996 gpz1100 that supposedly only needed the tank repair and relined and the carbs rebuilt, turns out it needs alot more including the title which when advertised was a "Clean Title" and ended up being a 2012 registration paperwork....

Picked up the bike Friday, and ordered a battery on Saturday and sent the Ignition cylinder in on Monday to a local locksmith to rebuild so I could see if she would turn on and turn over. Tank is damn near shot, there was so much rust I can poke a screw driver threw a half dozen pin holes gone bad and even m thumb in 1 spot. There isnt a single one in the world up for sale apparently on ebay either ....

In the mean time being unable to resist tinkering on a new project, I worked the plastics over, plastic welded and epoxied a tab and a few other spots, a quick buff and polish.
Pulled the top triple tree , clips ons and bar ends off, Powder coated them gloss black to match
I ordered most all the little things I needed like carb rebuild kits, fluids, plugs, seat covers ect. before checking the engine of course. Rookie move. Way to go junior, I remember my first....

Last night while still waiting for all my parts to arrive I decided to skip the waiting and just hook up a battery charger to starter and turn it over that way. Well lucky me. Shit is seized up tight.

Everything Original is there, if she doesn't free up I am likely to push this into the corner of the garage for a year and bitch about the waste of money...

Looks like I will be rebuilding this engine or looking for a swap in the future...

Seems to be a limited amount of information on these bikes ? Can anyone point me towards a source of knowledge?

Threw a few photos up, the first 2 the previous owner sent me, the last 3 were showing a buddy after I cleaned it up and powder coated some parts. the tank is self explanatory...

ZRX forum as engine is pretty much identical. How much money you willing to spend on a bike that might bring $2500 ? part out ?

@mte78 Man the body on that looks right but I have 3 nipples on the rear. The rest seems to look the same. Thanks though.

@quisp Thanks Ill look into that, Parting it out was something I considered, I got the Battery in and ignition cylinder back from the locksmith and everything else works well, starter just thunks though with cyl 4. being siezed. Otherwise a complete bike minus the tank.

It looks like to rebuild the engine Im not getting away for less than 500 doing the work myself. Not alot of options for replacements out there for these. The ZRX market is helping though. 120 for a good condition used cylinder with healthy crosshatching with pistons, 220 for new piston rings OEM, 200 for a full engine gasket set, and thats not getting to the bearings yet...

Unless this bike has sentimental value , your looking at a lot of money for a $2500 bike in mint cond, You can find used 1100 engines for 800 or less.

Likely it's a California-spec tank with connections for a charcoal canister. You can still use it, just put some rubber caps on the unused nipples.

As rare as solid tanks are for these old nails, I would recommend jumping on this one ASAP.

It may be a pig, but it's a pig with a rocket in it's ass!

I will do some checking on that Charcoal idea this evening. i know the two lines that feed those nipples are non fuel rated and run under the seat behind the airbox but to be honest there was no need to follow them more at the time.

I would be stoked if thats the case, I do know there were a few options like that with less vents, none in black as I recall tho.

One nipple is undoubtedly the overflow tube and the two for the canister allow any raw fuel to be absorbed by the charcoal and the fumes recycled via the airbox. It's an emissions device much like the secondary air system; it has no effect on how the engine runs and you can do without either.
