I know this thread is fairly old but I recently bought a 98 zx7r as a project had to wire in a new harness including coil leads and plug wires but I'm thinking I got the plug wires mixed up some how and can't get it to start I did get back fire but I believe it was coming out tail pipe

Switching the high tension leads between 2/3 or 1/4 wont make a difference if they attached to the correct coil. Have you done any engine work such as cam timing? If not, do you have a bad valve in #3? You can verify the valve by a compression check.
Just a couple of thoughts.

|Vaness||Hi, mine is runnig inverted (red wires to the green leads), and I've got crappy running for a week. After that it seems the IC made it right, because the engine became better and better alone, w/o replacement of the wires to the correct coils terminals. They are still inverted and the bike runs great now. Go figure. Mine is ZX9. In the end my starter idler became faulty, because of so many start...|

|ZXracer13||OMG that is exactly the firing order and wiring problem answer i needed!!!! i did have the wires on wrong. i changed it to the way u said and it instantly started up. thank u thank u thank u kawi kid!! i owe u one. perfect explanation. bravo. u just dropped a truck load of candy to a kid.|

Is the wiring feeding the coils correct. The red wires should have (one going to 1/4 coil and the other going to 2/3coil), the red wires are attached to the black leads on the coils and, the green a black wires go to the green leads on the coils, ( 1/4 coil is the black wire and, 2/3 coil is green wire.

|ZXracer13||ive been thru my manual and it just tells me that i shouldve labeled everything. wish i had it when i took it apart. idk that back fire sounds big enough to blow a valve seal but it could be in my head.|

|ZXracer13||and i switched wires on the top coil and it blew a backfire that couldve hurt somebody lol but didnt luckily. if it doesnt matter if its 2 and 3 or 3 and 2 on one coil......y the backfire and no start? so lost and so close. i really think the wires on back of the coils are in the right spot but its the wires to the cylinders that are mixed somehow.|

correct firing order with wire correction
hi i took off my coils a long time ago and cant remember what the correct firing order is. smart me took them off the wiring harness as well. when i tried to start it im getting back fire out of cylinder 3. i know that 2 and 3 on one coil and 1 and 4 on the other but if it was that easy then my baby would be started right now. top coil is currently running 1 from top then 4 on bottom of top coil. top coil has red wire to green lead on coil and green wire is connected to black lead on top coil. the lower goes to cylinder 2 on top and 3 on bottom. bottom coil has red wire leading to green lead and bottom is black on black lead. what ami doing wrong and why is cylinder 3 backfiring? probably highly related. thanks in advance. oh and my bike is a 94 zx7 i think its the l motor if that makes a difference. something so simple.....
