Clutch adjustment problem

Hi there, I have a '99 ZX9R with about 25,000km on the clock. Lately it seems the clutch is riding. When I rev the engine with 1st gear selected and the clutch in, the bike seems to inch forward just a little bit. This has also made gear changes (especially 1st to 2nd) a wee bit noisy.

With the hydraulic clutch set up on this bike I am unable to adjust the clutch as you would with a normal cable set up. The workshop manual tells me that the hydraulic clutch system never needs adjusting.

Any ideas on whats going with it or anyone else out there who has had similar problem?

Otherwise its an awesome bike!

The 98-00 ZX9R's clutch is cable actuated. If lever adjustment is correct, what you are telling me suggests it's time to replace the friction discs.

I'm not much of a mechanic, but what I mean by hydraulic clutch set up is from the clutch lever to the engine and it has a little bleed nipple at the end. The fluid reservoir is at the correct level but as you've said the problem is internal.

Thanks very much for that. Now I can get it sorted out.

I was positve ZX9R's clutch's were cable operated from 98' on... Could it be yours is a 1997?

Either way, I still believe your clutch is worn beyond adjustment limits. Just to be sure, try bleeding the system using a 'MightyVac' or similar hydraulic pump before disassembly. You never know...

that is not a 99 zx9r that u have.
1994-1997 zx9rs were hydraulic clutches
1998-2003 zx9rs were cable clutches
i would check the slave cylider as well as the frictions wile you have it apart could be a bad seal in there giving you roblems.

I've done some digging around on the net etc. and you're right, it ain't a 99.

I'm not sure exactly what year it is, but it's got ZX900B stamped on it which I believe is the model from 94-97? How would I find out for sure what year it is? It's a UK import first registered in 99. Sounds like you guys would probaly know just by looking at it. Its color scheme is black and gun metal grey, not sure if they came with that color for that model only.

Thanks for your help guys.
