Gas leaking - proper diagnosis??

So I noticed my gas was leaking and the first thing I suspected was the gas tank. I saw the fuel dripping from the silver piece at the bottom of the gas tank which I now know is called the fuel tap. I couldn't work on it right away so I had it parked overnight and left a drain pan to collect all the gas. So the next day, the gas had stopped leaking so I figured all the gas leaked out but when I took the gas tank out, there was still a little gas left, about half a gallon. I'm guessing my fuel tap is messed up because it kept leaking until the level of the gas inside the tank went below the pipe coming out of the fuel tap, which would explain why the half gallon was still left. What do you guys think?? Thanks.
