GP Shift

I am interested in running GP Shift on my 94 ZX9 along with aftermarket rearsets. Woodcraft makes the kit for about $200. I have a dedicated track bike with GP shift and and don't want to brain fart and launch myself on either the street or the track. I have heard of people flipping the shift arm and grinding the sprocket cover with a Bridgeport to allow the arm to move, so I got a spare cover on Ebay. Anyone actually done this and if so how and did the stock linkage work? Thanks for any advice.

well i dont have a older 9 but i on my 03 i had to grind i small portion of the sprocket cover to enable the shift linkage to move correctly. I know on the newer bikes you can just rotate it but seems on older ones you have to do i little diy. i can get pics of mine if needed

I'd appreciate seeing some pics if it's not too much trouble. Thanks.

You may want to look into a dirtbike style lever, like what's used on the ZX14s. As long as the spline is right it should slide right on, will automatically be reversed to GP shift, won't require any grinding or modifying of anything around it and will eliminate some linkage too.

GP Shift Pics

Thanks for the pics, Stangracer. I'm afraid I don't know exactly what "getting a dirtbike-type shifter" means. I don't think I could just go into a dealership and ask for one either, so I'd appreciate it if someone could explain exactly what that means. Thanks again.

Rather than the shift lever being mounted to the rearsets and connected to the gear selection shaft of the tranny via linkage, the shift lever simply mounts directly to the shaft. This is also the way the ZX14 is set up from the factory. Actually, any dealer should have a dirt bike shift lever on the wall.

Dirt bike shift lever

Okay, I know what you mean. On my track bike someone just took one of those and cut the lever at the knuckle and re-welded it on the back side with the lever going toward the back wheel because the rearsets move the pegs back back so far it put the shift lever in the optimal position. I don't know if that would work or not without getting one and seeing what would work. I'll check it out. Thanks again.

It works!

Thanks again to everyone who offered up suggestions. I bought a sprocket cover on ebay and had a tuner I trust jonesin' to fire up his Bridgeport mill to make it all work. Lo and behold, all we had to do was flip the shift knuckle. It clears and looks fine. We used the stock shift rod too. Installing the Woodcraft rearsets and flipping the shift pattern plus installing a new brake banjo bolt/pressure switch for the brake light, took about an hour. I took it for a ride and got back in the dark or I'd have taken pics. I'll try to get some on here.
