There's no replacement for displacement. A stock crank could probably handle it if it's not too tired, but if a motor is in need of a top-end job, just dropping in a big-bore kit would probably quickly reveal what else was nearing the replacement point. The other thing is, when you change one thing, you need to change others to get full advantage. This may involve headwork, bigger intake valves, bigger carbs and bumpier cams. That being said, Muzzy and JE make top quality stuff.

I haven't heard anything about the JE kit, I've heard Muzzy's have a tendency to have problems. It's been a while but I think it was the cylinder walls were too thin. I have a 973 wiseco with 2mm over valves and webcam cams, with about 10,000 miles on it. The stock valve size and cams are plenty aggressive to work with the overbore. Check out the 9's stock valve size compared to the current bikes, it's not much smaller. The bigger bore unshrouds the valves and really wakes up a 9. Cleaning up the ports would help some as well, but you really don't need to do much else to get 150+ hp with a big bore. I've never heard of the cranks ever being a problem on the 9.

On another note I've heard only good things about the Zlock kits. They are very helpful and would steer you in the right direction if you bounce questions off them. I talked them at least twice for upwards of an hour and never bought anything from them and they were just as happy talking at the end as the beginning.
