Newbie with questions

Hey guys, i'm a newbie here and to bikes in general. I have been working on import cars for a few years now and have been wanting to get a bike. I didn't think I had the money but I came across a good deal. There is a 96 zx9r that needs a coolent res, a tune up, and second gear slips. The bike belongs to the guys grandson that doesn't want it. He said he would sale it for 500. The paint looks new, seems to be a good bike with low miles.

So how hard is it to install a new transmission on a scale from 1-10?

Thanks

From 1 to 10 I'd say 12!!! You have to jrop the motor and split the caseings. You have to take the whole bottom half of the motor off.

But you problaby don't need a whole tranny just new shift forks. It's cheaper but you gadda do the same amount of work.

for $500 bucks sure. You can pick up a new motor for between $800-$1300 And it would be good as new or you could pay to have new shift forks put in for about $600-$800 plus parts

I'd just buy a new motor myself there is less down time!

It's cheap as long as the problems you mentioned are the only things wrong with it. otherwise it'll add up real fast and start demanding more money than you have to get it running. Money + time = AHHH! But worst comes to worst u could always re-sell it. So all in all if you don't like the idea of getting a loan or making payments for a better newer bike. get the one your lookin at and take a chance

I checked on how much it would cost to fix the tranny and it turns out out kawasaki place will not work on anything older than a 2000. Funny enough the yamaha/honda place said they would do it but it would cost about 1500-2000 dollars. The only reason I checked is beacuse I don't think I have the time to spend doing the work myself, though now that you mention it I could swap motors fairly easy right? anyway where do you think I could get a motor for it? I checked e-bay and places like that but found only newer modle stuff.

Thanks for the input thus far

If not on Ebay.com try Craigslist.com

Motors for that bike are hard to find the 94-97 zx9r motor is very popular in can be made to fit 91-95 ZX7R BUT not the other way around.
