No reserve?

I have not had my 1999 zx9 for long.
I was not paying attention and hit 310km since my last fill with gas. I turned the knob to reserve and could not get the bike started again. I was out of gas!
I pushed it to the nearest gas station, filled it up, and the bike started up right away.
Question:
Has anyone else had this happened?
Is this a known issue for this bike?

It will be a couple of days but I will pull off the gas tank and see if I can figure out what is wrong.

Any suggestions?

my 01 did the same thing to me when i first got it. ran outa gas and flipped to reserve and couldnt get it going. had to run a gallon of gas to it then it started fine and i filled it up. I havent messed with the reserve since then. my suggestion is to fill her up and switch it to reserve as soon as your done filling it up and see if you can get more than 310 km out of the tank. I'm not exactly sure how that system works but its possible the reserve is hard to tap for the fact that its not used very much. maybe like trying to start a bike after it hasnt been used very much. its a shot in the dark

I had the same problem with my 02 ZX9R. The problem was with the fuel tap. There is a short straw (reserve) long straw (regular). What happens is the fuel is drawn from the long straw in the on position, then when you flip to reserve it pulls from the short straw. My problem was that there was not short straw & it was just pulling it from the hole where it should be & by that time the tank is almost empty. I replaced the fuel tap. I couldn't find the short straw anywhere in the tank.
