ZX9 Fuelling Problem

OK, work this one out, it’s got me baffled.

I’ve got a ZX9 98 with a fuelling problem. In between 3000-4000 rpm she splutters real bad, it only happens at those revs, above and below that range she’s as smooth as you like.

If I’m in a low gear (1st and 2nd) I can open the throttle pretty much as I like and pass through the 3-4k rev range with little if any trouble. If I’m in a higher gear and pulling from a low speed then she’ll splutter really bad, in fact if I try to open the throttle up while she’s in the 3-4K range she can actually run out of fuel and stall.

I have to get through the 3-4k rev by assign through that rev range quickly, it’s near impossible to get through that rev range from 3rd gear upwards at a more steady rate of acceleration. I can get through the 3-4K range in higher gears by accelerating ‘slowly’ which I guess allows the carbs not to get starved of fuel.

I’ve had the carbs stripped about ten times trying to cure the problem and have checked most obvious stuff. I’ve checked the float levels in the carbs and they’re within range. They’re very accurately synchronized, in fact this trouble only started after I syncd’ the carbs which were previously way out of sync’. I’m guessing the problem was hidden by the carbs being out of sync with some carbs having enough fuel while others starved.

The bike has an Akropovic full exhaust system with a Dynojet kit fitted and K&N filter and was specially set up by a pretty well known performance shop. In fact assuming the Dynojet needles and jets setup might be wrong I managed to obtain and fit another set of identical Dynojetted carbs which had also been specially set up for a full Akro’ system and there was no change, the problem was exactly the same!

Other than that she’s a brill bike. What you say?

You might check the throttle position sensor on the right side of the carbs.

Could be a vaccum problem Kawi's are known for that. Check your vaccum lines on top the motor and the ones under the intake just under the carbs.

ALSO check the connection to the ram air under the front fairing there is a little Y valve that is accually an air filter pull off the lines and clean it out.

my old 92 750 was that way. i jetted it, rejetted it, tore the carbs apart on a couple of occations, and never fixed it. brought it to a good shop for them to figure it out. they did some research to find out there was nothing you could do about the dead spot around 3000 rpm. i have no clue why but there was no fixing it.

I had a 92 ZX7 and had no dead spot in it pulled hard form 1100 RPM's on up to 14,000!!! Did do a little work to it though... Full D&D, 2 degree timing advancer, Stage1 jet kit....
