1998 ZX9R C1 Running Rich. Help!

Hi Guys.

Took my bike to a local dyno to have a look at it to see if we can find the problems with it, and as i thought its running REALLY rich.

Its done 40k miles now.

The dyno is reading a fueling ratio off the scale at the bottom, way rich (like 8.5-1 at some points.

However the exhaust is standard, and after the shop taking the carbs off and looking at them so are they - all jetted to 155 mains as per spec, and the clip heights/float levels etc are also all correct.

The shop's next thought is that it is likely to be a cam timing/valve clearances issue.

I am not an expert about this, however i would need to leave the bike there with them so its all got to be planned.

Any ideas guys?

Well this is tricky. You should do some basic dianostics first. Compression test? Wet and dry, Vacume test, Ignition "Coils". what about spark pugs, old, or new. Another thought is, have you owned the bike very long, has it had the crap beat out of it? Wear and tear will cause all kinds of different problems. One more thought, have you moved recently, to a different altitude, you know, are you at sea level or the colorado rockies. The higher the altitude the richer your jetting gets. Also, just because the book says 155 doesn't mean it should be. That spec. was set up in Japan; mine is 190 stock at sea level and it is perfect; in the winter, a little rich right now. Oh just one more thougt, does your bike have the stock exhaust? If it does the catalytic converter might be toast or maybe an oxygen sensor pack it in.
Well I hope this dosen't confuse things too much. Do you have a manual? You can download them for free, be methotical and do each test as outlined in the manual. After all it is running, that's good.
Good luck
