newbie girl with MANY questions

Alright so I have very little bike experience, I've ridden quads my entire life though, ridden a fat cat, and rode a Harley a tiny bit. So basically a noob, lol.

But I have the opportunity to buy a 94 ZX9 for $500! It needs a new front plastic, there is a dent in the gas tank, doesn't have 2nd gear, and needs the stock jets put back in it. But it runs good and has a clean clear title.

So basically do you guys think its worth it? And if I do get it, do you think someone will trade me straight across for a smaller bike? I think a 900 is WAY too much for me, I'm thinking up to a 600 would be good.

Would it be easier/cheaper to buy a used tranny and swap rather than buy the gears and rebuild it myself?
Whats the easiest way to get the rust out of the tank (from the dent)
Also, he says it probably needs a new chain and sprockets, how can I tell for sure?

Opinions anyone? Thanks!

well, $500 is a steal, but the amount of work that needs to be done to it is going to be a pain...unless you like getting into the nitty gritty, which it sounds like you do. It would be a great fixer upper to fix and sell, cause 900 is too big for a "noob" aka beginner rider. Problem is its 94 and when its all send and done, you will get around $2800-3000 for it.
If you want to ride, I suggest finding a Honda F2 or F3 or maybe an SV650 because you will grow out of a Ninja 500R or Suzuki GS500 by the end of the summer.
My .02!

I do have a nice D&D that you could custom fit to that 9R though ;)...

its going to be a headache to fix and a headache to sell... my first bike was a worked up zx9... you just need to control yourself and know when to let off the throttle... ride safe!
