Speedometer Cable install

99 ZX7r, got a replacement Speedometer cable to install. I see where it connects on the speedo, but where in the EFF does the other end connect to on the bike?

Also, which end connects to the speedometer? The end with the notch or the allen type end?

You don't see the speedo drive with a nipple on it? Should be right there acting as a spacer.

Left side of the front wheel, there should be a silver speedo drive. If that's gone, somebody removed it and installed regular spacers.

I believe I found where it goes. Sitting on the bike it is on the left side, almost on the bottom of the fork where it threads in.

I set the slotted end, tightened it down and carefully installed the allen type end into the gauge. No go on the speedo. We heard a clicking sound at low speeds, disconnected it and got the click to go away, but still doesn't read on the gauge. Any chance we're just dumb and aren't connecting this right? If I connect the cable to the wheel and roll the bike, I clearly see it spin.

Could be the speedo is bad just like christikitty said. mostlikely a gear inside of it.

typically the drive units strip out. they have plastic gears inside of them.

I had the one in my nighthawk take a shit one day when I left class. Drove around for like 2 months without a speedo, put it away for the winter... drove it some more... and only when i decided to sell it did I discover just how easy they are to replace.

So I was thinking of rebuilding the motor.

I know for a fact the part on the fork works, I connected it on the wheel and spun the front tire... So I'm thinking the speedo itself must be bunk?

I can put the square end into the speedo and turn it by hand and absolutely nothing registers on it. If I remember correctly this is when I heard the clicking sound.

Is it possible to buy parts for the speedo new or are we talking used from ebay?

When my buddy bought the bike, the previous seller said the speedo cable "exploded" off the bike on his last trip of the season. He supplied the new cable.

How do you get the end off under the gauge ? I can't even get my hand in to turn the cable attachment.
