Is a rebuild kit necassary?

I'm gonna be cleaning the carbs up and was wondering if a rebuild kit is necassary. And then if it is, would it still be if I was gonna put in a jet kit?

Any recomendations on a carb clean/jet install write up would be appreciated as well!

No kit needed. You will need 4 or 5 cans of carb cleaner though.

after some searching, some guys were sayin to get a big tub of cleaner and soak for at least 24 hrs and so on.... I didn't think it would be that intense but I haven't ever done it on a bike. Any one got a really good write up I could follow, possibly with some pics?

depends on how bad the carbs are...if the bike just feels like it needs a tuneup, you can get away with spray cans. some of us that have had bikes sitting for awhile get clogged pilot jet passages, that area really needs to be soaked otherwise it doesnt idle right and cruising suffers.

just inspect all your rubber, dont try taking the o-rings out of the float bowls, theyll probably break. the only other thing to make sure is your float needle seats, little rubber cone, inspect it for any flat spots and look at the base of it for any corrosion, corrosion can actually "jack" the seal upwards and throw your tune off...and thats IF it doesnt cause flooding issues first

odds are not in your favor of getting it cleaned the first time- don't worry its not you- its a frustrating job, and the carbs on our bikes are tempermental-you can go through the drill several times, and then voila' you will finally dislodge that microscopic piece of crap that has been causing your bike to stumble-

It's not really terrible at all.. a slight hesitation and every once in awhile I'll hear one "pop"... I'm sure they're not that bad, But I have never done it before and all the names of everything don't really mean much to me right now because I have no pictuers to go on and have no idea what they are lol... I just need to make sure I have a refference to go through before I dig in

just search for a shop manual before you dig in, thats the best thing you can buy for your bike.. and after you clean them a few times ( trust me will probly do it at least 3 or 4) it becomes really easy

I've cleaned mine once since I've owned my zx7 (bought it in August of this year),how often do you guys clean yours?

Is there a recommended frequency or should you go by how the bike is acting?

It may not be necessary to get rebuild kits, but replacing any rubber O-rings and gaskets is good practice, since if any of them fail after you get it back together, you end up doing it twice because you were too cheap to replace some insignificant but crucial part. Some of these carbs have an O-ring on the spray tube (thing in the center that holds the main and needle jets) that gets hard and fails over time causing a rich-running condition. Also, the Viton tips on the float needles can develop a ridge that causes them to not seal perfectly.

Well the manual is here, and I only paid about $27 for a hard cover! And holy @#$% I am unsure about any of the maintenance beyond this and last season, and there is alot... Bike is gonna get some WORK if I can get less than the 60 hrs a week I'm getting at work so far... Anyone close to Fort wayne? lol... I really want to have somebody thats used to this model to have around to help, but I'm a decent "self taught" mechanic and a couple of my buddies are certified in cars... I'm sure we can succesfully use the manual but if there is any interest out there, I have no problem supplying food and beverages for an extra hand lol... Here is a list of things needing to be done...

ALL new fluids
-1,+2 chain and sprocket kit to put on
carb tear down/cleaning/adjustment
re-polish frame
valve check/adjustment if needed
tires

Things to do if I have the time:
plastic repair
mirror delete/rear camera install
new paint

She is gonna be a fun ride next season!

I'll try to get started here soon, and keep you guys posted! Any tips/tricks/suggestions are appreciated

Just take your time and follow the book. If you run into any roadblocks, post up. Everything has been done before by someone.
