just bought a 87 zx750 f1
ok so new to the site and its my first road bike... i have riden off road since a teenager but always wanted a road bike.. so i bought a zx7 with only 13k miles and i only paid 750.00 for it... since i've had it i have done an oil change and had to replace the stock air box with air pods because it was a mess... i know i need to rejet the carbs and was told a stage 3 jet kit is what i need also there was a small 90 degree tube that came from the airbox to a hole between the carbs and air box... what should i do with that... plus when i tried to do the oil change the muffler cross pipe was in the way of removing the filter.. am i missing something here? also when i tried to change the plugs my plug sockets were to big and to small so i matched it up and the socket was to wide to fit in the cyclinder head.. again confusing... i do have the service manual but theres no mention of these issues so i must be a total noob! i do have a new 4 to 1 header but it doesnt have the rest of the muffler.. so what do i buy or can i use part of the stock muffler for the end of the pipe? the bike runs but theres alot of bogging when i hit the throttle .. any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!

ok so i got a spark plug tool but i can only get the outer cylinder plugs swapped out.. the tool is about a inch longer then the plug caps and the frame is preventing the tool for entering the cylinder.... now the plugs that came out looked pretty new and were greyish in color so either the plugs have been changed recently or only the outer ones were so not sure what to do here about the inner ones... the clutch is starting to act up though so i check the fluid levels and i think some air got in the lines.. the fluid is a dirty brown so i may just flush the line and refill completely i dunno.. 35 reads and still no help .. hmm

ok so still working on this bike and i just installed a stage 3 dyno jet kit, wow what a difference in power.. totally shocked me when the front wheel came up with out trying.. when i did the jet kit i replaced all the float bowl gaskets but it still leaks gas out of the carbs.. not sure why because i have cleaned them everytime i take them off.. im so impressed with the way the bike runs now after that jet kit.. the idle is so nice and theres no dead spots in the rev from idle to 7k rpm and man does it pull now!! only thing is just as i was turning into the driveway i lost all throttle response so i think the cable slipped off or something in the handle bar broke was still idling like a champ though
seems like everytime i fix something either something else breaks or the carbs start leaking again...but i do feel like im making progress
yeah the throttle cable just slipped off the carb.. musta forgot to tighten it down

I'm glad I didn't offer any advice about jetting, because I would have been totally wrong.
The fuel leak could be coming from a number of places. I think I read on the forum about dusting baking powder/soda onto engine parts to identify where fuel/oil leaks originate.
And don't get discouraged about the lack of responses. Keep posting/bumping. 7r owners are an active, die-hard bunch here. I think some may shy away from answering because they don't have knowledge specific to your 87 model.

Welcome!
Sounds like you're moving along just fine. Half the fun is getting your hands dirty and fixing things yourself.

You made installing a jet kit so easy. What brand did you use? Maybe you could share some of the settings. I plan to ditch my air box also on a 88 ZX750.

as far as installing the kit, it was a dynojet kit 2126.003 .. a few interesting things happened actually during this installation.. i found there instructions very unclear at best.. the stage 1 and 2 called for a dd#30 to drill the holes on the slides and the stage 3 called for a dd#31 .. the parts list only lists dd#30 and dd#5/32 , on top of that it calls for all the spacers to be used above the c clip..
now since i was reading the instructions while drilling i grabbed the dd#30 first so i only assumed the other bit was the one i needed... so i took all the slides one at a time and clamped them , drilled then sprayed with compressed air to remove any shavings.. after each slide was drilled i replaced the needle with the new ones but found it very hard to place the spacers above the c clip so i just put them under it (this was out of pure frustration) then installed new springs.. i did this on all the carbs before moving to the float bowls.. once that was done i flipped them over to install the main jet and new gaskets , after everything was done i put the carbs on and tank started it up and did some testing.. now its fall where i live so its cold out not sure if things will change come spring but bike runs great now very noticable difference in power.. so i write an email with a close up of the supplied instructions to dynojet for kicks, i get a response that sez it was a typo and i should of used dd#30.. now again the bike is running better then it ever has but i know that the holes were drilled too big per there specs and the spacers are under instead of over the c clip on the needle.. also the reason i couldnt keep the spacers above the clip was because the center hole in the spacer was wider than the top of the needle so everytime i would try to seat them in place they would just fall to the side.. the last tuning i did was reseating the idle mixture screws then 3 full turns out.. im not sure how much these changes can alter performance but it honestly runs amazing now
so to restate its got independant air pod filters on the carbs with a stage 3 dyno jet kit installed and stock exhaust at the moment

some observations
 Hey. Whatever works right?!
I wouldn't worry about the jet needle spacers or the supplemental hole size. As long as the jet needle retainer spring can keep consistent pressure on it forcing it to remain seated, no worries there. Many aftermarket jet needles come with a top tower where the spacers can live. Doesn't sound like yours had that. Frustrating, I'll bet.
The pilot air screws on most carb'ed bikes are set at 1.5 - 2.0 turns out (some go as high as 2.5). If down the road you experience hard starting, spark plug fowling or wet spark plugs, you might consider reducing the number of turns. I explain why in the underlined Hyperlink above and it could have seasonal relevance.
I bet you're beginning to love your purchase.

absolutely love this bike at the moment and as far as the idle screws, they are turned out 3 times because thats what the kit called for, im sure come spring with warmer weather i will probly need to tweak them but currrently its not hard to start cold and not hard to start hot, due to the age of the bike i may just leave it as is for now till i really get some riding time on it, but with out a doubt it was a great investment so far!!

Nice bike. Wish mine was in that nice of shape. Just wondering if when your cruising along your bike likes to find a groove in the road and give a little wiggle once in awhile. Mine seems to. It never feels like its going to go out of control or anything, just catches me by surprise and don't like the feel. Thinking it just might be a characteristic of that 16 inch front tire. All my other bikes have 18 inch front tires and don't seem to notice them grabbing grooves as bad. These are cool old school bikes and have lots of power. Seems like I can't pass a car without hitting 140 KMH. It's great.
