Is this 92 ZX7 worth it?
It is a 92 with a tranmission that slips out of 2nd gear. So the question is how much would it roughly cost to rebuild the tranny? He wants $1200 for it.

You have to pull the engine to fix it.If you're have a shop do the job, figure $800 to $1200 roughly.Plus parts.

Probably worth it. Not sure what the market bears in your area, but ~$1000 seems pretty close on that.
No idea what rebuilding the tranny costs...if it were me, I'd low ball and see if I could ride the bike as is for a while without 2nd, but that's because I'm cheap and impatient.

No way, the plastic is hammered on both sides and it needs $800 - $1000 worth of work. Unless you can fix it yourself I'd keep looking, you'll have $3000 invested into that bike in no time.

I reckon different strokes for different folks...I'm more interested in riding than how my bike looks. I have no side plastics (I do, but they're in my garage) and two colors of back plastics...my bike surges at low rpm and leaks a little out of that darn pushrod seal; BUT from 5,000 on up she's smooth, she screams and when I'm on country twisties no one can even see what my bike looks like...SO, $1,000 for a bike that I can probably tear ass down the twisties on the day I buy it seems okay to me (skipping 2nd if possible).
Especially since that is something that could be tackled by the home mechanic. Or just buy another motor...I've got two spares.

I'm not sure how long you can jump over 2nd into 3rd, it's probable a bent shift fork. So if he pays $1000 for the bike and $1000 to get it fixed he's got a $2000 bike that looks like shit, on this side of the country you can buy a bike that looks brand new for $2500 - $3500.

Or you can hit e-bay there are 3 on there right now starting at $1400.
Usually people who don't take pride in the appearance of their vehicles don't bother with things like valve adjustments, oil changes and other service and maintenance items.

Hey, to each their own...obviously not a lot of good deals in his area or he wouldn't be asking about that one. I'm not arguing, I was just giving my (apparently minority) opinion.

Sounds like you should be in the plastic toy section of these forums, otherwise know as the ZX6R Forum Just kidding around. An 09 ZX6R makes 43ftlbs of torque @ 12,000 rpm & 108hp @ 13,750 rpm compared to the 7's 53ftlbs of torque @ 8,800 rpm and similar 108hp but at 11,200 rpm but the 6 is a lot lighter. That 10ftlbs of torque 3,000 rpm lower in the power band is hard for a 6 to beat, I've ridden a bunch of 600cc sport bikes, I personally would not buy one, there simply not any faster the the old 750cc bikes and not as stable, that's my opinion of course and you know what they say about opinions. Even the GSXR 750 (the only 750cc sport bike still alive) only makes 54ftlbs of torque but it's much higher in the rpm band at 11,250 and a monstrous 123hp but way up at close to 13,000 rpm, it still only makes 112hp or so at 11,000 rpm. The point is these old bikes can be had at a fraction of the cost of a new bike and still offer outstanding performance, that's why so many 20 year olds are buying them (see the age pole on this forum)

Well, I'm not looking for the most powerful bike out there. I am set on on a 91-95 Z because I love the looks of these bikes. Plus the fact they are stable. IN my opinion it is the best looking sport bike ever made. I've wanted one since I first saw one in 94 when I was 11 years old.
I found a 95 about 5 miles from my house for $1500 with no mechanical or cosmetic issues that I think I'll pounce on.

I'll third that, I've owned a lot of 3/4 liter bikes from the mid 80's to early 90's and the ZXR was the bike I kept.

Now i'm almost done puttin here back on the road .It took alot of time but these bikes are worth it.I think the new bikes look all the same like new cars do.So i will stick to the old school and smile......

I personally like the look of the late 90's early 2000 zx7r's with their teardrop headlights and dual ram air ports. The early 90's color schemes drive me nuts too with the pinks, blues and purples...I'm glad Kawasaki got away from that.
'96-'03,gunmetal,green/white or black with a big fat 190 on the back rim...Now that's beast, what a mean looking bike!
I agree though, most of the new bikes look the same.To me they look like some sort of pissed off wasp or yellow-jacket.

I third what 92 and Joe said, I was at my local powersports dealer today to pick up an oil filter and headlight bulb for my new toy and was checking out the new bikes just for kicks. You guys are so right, they all look alike. :-)
I think I got a pretty good deal, a 95 with no mechanical issues for $1500 with 20k on the clock. Starts up instantly and runs great. The bike I was originally talking about needed a tranny rebuilt and his best price was $1200. I lowballed at $500 and he said no, so I passed and got this.
Only thing is the left fairing is cracked in the rear and sort of hanging down, so for now I'll rig it with a zip tie until I can locate a good used fairing.
