winter thought

how much torque/compression psi can the internals and trans take on a 90 zx7r? reason for asking i was considering turboing my bike over winter.. is it pretty much the same setup as a car?
turbo mani's
then the compressor side to the intake then exhaust side obviously to the exhaust,

mines has carbs, will that make a difference..??

anything will help thanks , also what size trim of turbo? would 40mm compressor/exhaust side be too big to spool or will that be the right size range?

I am actually in the process of mapping this out as well and so far have come up with this:
turbocharger with an A/R of 0.48( i perfer external wastegate)
all the proper tubing (intake and exhaust)
a set of oil feed lines
exhaust and intake manifolds (obviously custom)
BOV
boost controler
jet kit ( oh yes you will need more fuel)
i suggest an extension to the rear or it will be near impossible to keep it down
i think i covered everything but after that its pretty much an easy build. the good thing is it will be less expensive due to no electronics like ECU
This engine will safely without any internal motor mods allow for 7psi anywhere after that i would suggest rods first then pistons ect.
If i left anything out someone will tell you but thats all i have thus far

please please do a detailed write up and push for it to become a sticky. I think i have a turbo lined up for me. Its a dsm-evo III. when it comes to turbos and air/fuel ratios and compression ratios im lost. but I have a friend willing to help.

I think I read you can do 6 or 7 lbs of boost without changing too much, but if you go higher, you'll need to change over to lower-compression forged pistons and have the crank balanced and blueprinted. If your machine doesn't have a rev limiter (some older bikes don't) you'll want to add one since over-revving with a turbo will turn the motor into a hand grenade. Standard carburetors either have to be modified or replaced with a single, turbo-ready carb. If your motor has more than a few thousand miles on it, I would also pull the head, replace all the head bolts with higher-spec items and get the best head gasket you can buy. Undercutting all the gears and renewing all the bearings in the trans will go a long way toward keeping everything in one piece. Get some stronger clutch springs and heavy-duty plates, too. If it slips out of gear or the clutch slips under boost, that could blow it up quick.

Ask your engine builder. He's built several engines for turbo applications and fabbed several turbo systems.Such as the system in the picture. That's my ZX12 with a turbo system I designed in my head and he and I fabricated.

Here's the link to the rest of my photos of this bike.

Yes all those things would be great however if he decides to run as low as 7psi it really would just be over kill but good precautionary method. However if the engine isnt extremely worn, yet well taken care of all i would advise would be to recheck all the head bolts and to check all gaskets to be sure as there is no leaking.

on a different note hey mike thats a beautiful setup on the 12

Tom was the taller one with the diesel.I had my corvette there.Steve's building your engine and I haven't talked to him about it at all.I do know some of the parts came in for it.I don't know if it was everything or not.
