Drain the carbs, put a fuel stabilizer in the tank and remove the battery. You can place the battery on a trickle charger that keeps the battery good.

The fuel stabilizer is a great idea but run it for a bit first to circulate the fuel then drain the carbs would be a better idea. Change the oil, lub the chain, cover it with some rat poison, make sure it's has a balanced coolant to water if it's stored in cold weather area, and put it on front and rear stands if you have it.

storing a bike... everything said above will work... but i don't believe in storing bikes.. they get mad at you.. it's bad bike karma... ya take 'em apart... leave'em behind.. they remember that...

have a friend take it for a ride every couple of weeks.. your bike's happy, your friend is happy... everyone is happy.. lol...

pull the tank and youll see a plug in the bottom of the fuel bowl-its like a brake bleeder valve on a caliper if youve ever done it-you should get about a 1ft section of vacuum hose to put on the end of the nipple, that way when you drain the fuel it wont get all over the altenator.

i like the buddy idea-they dont even need to ride the bike, just start it up twice a month for 10 minutes or so.

also rat poison is a great tip. a bike cover, plastic, or ceran wrap should keep most spiders out of the intake, but stuff some socks in there just to be safe-i dont think 8 legs could do any harm...but who knows what kinda bugs could crawl up there in 8 months.
