what gear @ what speed @ what rpm?
ok, could be stupid question, but i need peace of mind when riding this bike.
i got a 98 zx7r previously gently used as a stunt-bike. Unfortunately it didn't come with a cluster for it so i have no rpm, mph, exe.
i just got done installing a digital speedo and am wondering if anyone could post some normal riding [gear-speed-rpm] ratios for me to go off of because im new and still tone deff to motorcycle motors when it comes to rpm and would like to have some ballpark idea of how far im winding it up.
much thanks.

Does such a thing exist as a gently used stunt bike? You gotta wonder about this.
As for the other questions, you have to listen to the bike. It will tell you when to shift. Depends on how you want to ride. Riding hard for speed, you are going to run the RPMs high and shift, riding for fun, short shift at lower RPM. You'll get a feel for your bike before long and figure things out. I would say most people dont even pay much attention to the Tach.

A gently used stunt bike Hmmm sounds like an almost impossible thing, but congrats, are there any scrap/junk yards around your way, that maybe you could pilfer some bits off of? as to the the RPM man eventually you will know instinctively when to gear up or down, if not by sound, it will be the speed and the way the bike feels, no different that driving a stick shift really once you got it , you got it.
Stay safe.

thanks for the input, i ride the bike a ton, know when to shift and what (to me ) sounds like hi rpm's but i know that sportbikes have a way higher rpm range than anything that im used to, so i dont know if a high exhaust tone is just the newb in me thinking its high, or if its actually up there in rpms.
as far as the "gently used stuntbike" part, i guess i cant say for sure how gently, the bike has a few scratches, nothing major and the plastics are almost perfect. also the kid that i got the bike from was pretty small, these bikes being considered hard to stunt with in the first place because of there wight, i dont think he could throw it around that much.

Well the problem is, that most stunters hit that rev limiter hard and often. They smoke the tires and do lots of stoppies and wheelies. So you could endup having engine problems, fork problems and so on. But who knows, I hope you get lucky and that the bike treats you as well as you treat the bike. Good luck.

my seven is a previously used stunt bike... the motor runs like its brand new... no ticking or clicking... its 40 degrees out right now and i can go out side and start the thing with 2 seconds on the start button.. these motors are built to get there asses kicked and someone who says something different doesnt know what they are talking about ( i stick by that statement till i die.)
i have a cluster but havent installed it yet... ive just been paying attention to what tune the motors singing on different roads so i have an idea how fast i should go...
its kinda nice to see someone on here that bought a bike with the same backround as mine. keep your fluids new and no over revving downshifts and that motor will be fine.

Hey I wanted to revive this thread for my own knowledge....just a few questions. I have a 99zx7r...what is the stock gearing and ratios??? It feels like mine is a little lower geared than stock, but I'm not sure. 2nd...what speed@what rpm does your bike do..for reference. I do a lot of highway driving and am kinda weary of where I'm running.
Currently 70mph @5250 RPM in 6th....is that normal??

Sounds right??
stock gearing is a 525 chain 16/43 tooth sprockets..
I went 15/46 and the bike still tops out @163 with my 200lb ass on it....
At 70 mph I am roughly 5800-6200 rpm.... Gas milage did not suffer to bad... actually seems better when in town now... But BIG increase on WOW factor when riding over stock gearing!!

I went 14/46 on my bike and it runs about 6800 @ 70mph.
I ride 44 each day to and from work on the interstate and I'm getting around 40 mpg. I'm a big guy (read in FAT!) so I like the extra tq that I get from this gearing.

What do you guys think about gearing it down a little more for top end and highway driving? You think my city mileage, driving, etc...will suffer much?

my 7 could not pull full rpm range with stock gearing... you MIGHT save gas at the COST of a clutch??? jmo?
