I would like rebuild it.
You don't need any special tools. at least I didn't when I rebuilt the top end of my 96 motor.
I bought the motor for $600.00 and was told it was running. WRONG! no way to test when I bought it. lesson learned! cylinder 1 had 80 lbs compression!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tools I had to buy:
compression gauge $40.00
new rings and circlips $160.00 ish
new gaskets $35.00 I believe
cylinders honed $20.00 (repeat customer price!)
Valve job/refaced the valve seats/handed him the motor $160.00
Repair manual $30.00
Motorcycle lift stand $60.00 to lift/lower the motor from the frame.
Did all the work myself! with garage tools.
Personally if you think the motor is locked up, and you are going to remove the motor anyways. REBUILD IT.
Two things normally go on that motor, the piston or the crank/rod. If the timing chain is done, than the valves maybe done as well, than consider a motor.
Remove the motor, remove the cylinder cover, if you need to remove the cams before you get to the cylinder bolts, draw everything out and label! remove the cylinders by tappng the cylinder with a rubber malet. With the cylinders removed you will be able to turn the pick up side of the motor with a socket wrench.(left side of the motor). If the crank turns, you're golden. If the problem is there,...not golden. lol.
Believe me. I am not a mechanic, but was able to do this with just some garage tools and patience!
GOOD lUCK,
If you were local I would do it for you!

P.S. with the motor turning I was getting 165 lbs compression and 20%+valve seating loss on a pressurized valve seat test. After installing the rings/honing/re seating the valves,I was hitting 185 lbs compression in all 4 cylinders and 15% loss on pressure test. The acceptable value in the book is 10% no less. Well it's not a race motor so it's acceptable. And this I have heard from other people as well. New valves and re-surfacing would cost ALOT of money. And the motor is 12 yrs old!
Buying a used motor is a bigger head ache than attempting to fit it yourself!
I'm glad the motor was shot, it forced me to learn more about the bike!
