fuel problem

I just recently bought an 87 zx750r F1 and, I am trying to ressurect it. It was recently running after I put it in the shop for a carb sync, back tire, idle gear and starter replacement. In its previous life someone removed the stock air box and replaced it with the K&N cone filters, so I have a lot of hoses sitting in there connected to nothing. Last night I pulled the tank off to tighten the bands on the air filters. When I removed the tank it only had one small line going from the petcock to the carbeurators, and there was no gas spilling out of the petcock. I set the tank on my drive way carefully and the next thing I know gas is running out of the large nipple of the petcock. When I press the button on the petcock( which I assume is some sort of prime button.) the stream of gas gets larger. I have the small line going to a nipple on the topside of the carbs and there is a large line coming from underneath the carbs. Should this go to the large nipple on the petcock? I tried that and the bike wouldn't start. Is it because I didn't hold the prime button in before starting. I've looked at all the parts diagrams and cannot find anything on the routing of the fuel lines in a repair manual. Could someone please help me with this.
thanks

there should be 2 line going to the petcock 1 is the fuel line and the other is a vaccum line that pulls open the petcock when running. After you put the tank back on hold the prime button in while trying to start in if you can look at the fuel fillter and make sure it's filling up.

Wish I could tell you more but it's been a while since I seen 1 of those bikes
