Mine sounded like that and it was a bad rod bearing.

that sounds just aweful... What i would suggest is getting a long, solid rod of some sort, a place one end over each cylinder and your ear at the other end and listen for a knocking sound. If you hear a knocking sound it could be a bearing, or a busted wrist pin or connecting rod...

if not then it could be an exhaust leak. Listen around the exhaust ports (where the pipe meets the engine) to see if you hear a hissing/sucking sound...

but it does sound like it is knocking...

Without being there it does sound like a big end. The ear to large screw driver or rod as mentioned before will pinpoint where it is coming from.

I assume tappets have been all done & carbs balanced.
Pull in clutch & put into gear whilst holding back brake to eliminate transmission noises.
Big end will knock more on over run.
Exhaust leak noise will increase with throttle & will be a sharp tapping noise, duff tappet will be more constant.
Remove clutch case to check for anything loose that side. Also make sure generator drive intact.
Also drain off oil, any significant metallic particles found will probably be big end bearing shell fragments.

Def sounds like you threw a rod if you ask me. It's runnin, but making a tapping sound through the RPM range. For sh*t's n giggles just pull the head off and see what the top end looks like. And when you change the oil look for chunky oil (metal). But in all honosty sounds like time for a engine rebuild! While your at it, might as well do a lil PnP, cam's if possible, lil more fuel and put her back 2gether!

Scott

P.S. Mines got a light tick at low RPM but not very noticable. Only got 18k on motor but I'ma rebuild it at the years end or next years beginning!
