Redzula's Winter Build Thread

Not much of a build right now.

All I have are ideas and no time to do anything. The actual build wont srat for a couple weeks at least, I need to get my garage addition done before it gets really cold, so for not im just gathering ideas and some supplies.

THE BUILD:
I will be building an undertail to cover the black void around the exhaust.

The plan so far is to cover the black on the sides and connect the two side by having the undertail go above the exhaust. I plan on buildint it in sheet steel and then pulling a mold from that to make the piece in either fiberglass or carbon fiber.

I would like to find some raw carbon fiber in order to make the actual piece. any ideas for where to find some?

as it sits

idea Im planning on

alternative idea where the tail wraps under the exhaust MS paint doesnt show it hugging the muffler tightly

I am open to any ideas or suggestions so don't hold back

thanks shane thats a good price too. I think I may head that route instead of fiberglass. plus then I can say I made my own carbon fiber parts

Found this one online Redzula. I don't know how they keep it from melting but it looks sick as hell. Would look better w/ one hole I think.

I actually like that the kawi one has 2 holes. but they melt easy and hotbodies doesnt make them anymore. plus i dont want to get rid of my Akra. its a full system and I love it.

I am getting closer to closing the garage up so maybe soon I can get started.

P.S. I miss my RR. I want to find the rr forks and paint the bottom green too

You gonna make a mold first? You might try to make a frame out of wire or wood, stretch fleece over it, fiberglass resin the fleece and then remove the frame for your mold. Then sand it smooth as glass, lay down some mold-release and lay your carbon cloth/resin. Obviously that's over simplified, but I think you could do it and have it look pretty damn cool.

aight guys Im gonna pick up somt heavy cardstock and tig wire to get an idea of how to cut the steel for my mold I thought about making a buck in order to do the curve above the pipe and midpipe. I still may but for now I need to get the shape of the pipe(using the tig wire) and then will probably still make a plug for the metal forming. The idea is to keep the mold as smooth as possible so the carbon comes out smooth. I'll post pics of what I come up with tonight and hopefully start on the buck in a couple days

here is my first attempt at a paper undertail. I only did the 2 sides for now. when I have a little more time I will be using welding rod to form the reveal for the muffler.

I may rework these soon cus they arnt perfect but it was kinda hard holding a big sheet of posterboard and trying to cut all the arcs correctly. so for now this is what I got. tell me what you think.

btw I cut the piece that goes between the muffler and the plate too short so I had to tape a piece on which is why there is tape there

I think Im going to cut off the black plastic bit that sticks out where the stock quick lock pins are located.

Coming along pretty good red. The carbon is gonna look clean. How are you going to mount your custom undertail since there's only a couple mounts on the left side?

im gonna get a coupe more of thosr quick lock pins like the ones on the left and drill holes on the bottom lip of the tail fairing. pretty much where your arrows are. a couple of those and should hold the thing.

and I think Im gonna cut off the black plastic where those 2 clips are so that I dont have a rondom black strip like the one in the pics so I will have to drill new holes anyway.

Kawi Im gonna need 2 more clips at least maybe four. Did you have any of those left over from your teardowns?

interesting link about the process I plan on using to make my part.
http://www.hunterdogs.org/GeneralInf...COMPONENTS.pdf

I also bought a kit that has 3 sheets 12"X52" of 2X2 weave carbon fiber the kit comes with resin and everything else needed.

So on with the tail. I took the tail off and made a better paper template and its one piece . I also bent some sheetmetal I had over the muffler and cut it to its basic shape. I need to get some more metal so I can cut out the template and start welding it together.

One issue I am having is trying to figure out how to form the metal that will go over the midpipe. it is just a regular pipe but it is curved at the end so I cant just bend the metal over it like the muffler. I stopped by the muffler shop to get a u-bend and the cut it at the angle I need and slice it longways to be the perfect shape... they didnt have anything and ebay wants more than i want to spend on a mold. my next dea is to bend metal over the pipe and then pie cut the angles and weld it back together.

so for now here is ehat I have.

not much but its a start

and the would be view from the top
