Engine ping?

Hi guys I just picked up my new 2008 zx6r since brand new I think I can hear a little engine ping from say 2000-5000 rpm? I thought maybe the dealership put in the wrong grade of gas so switched it up with some shell 91. I think i have only 200km on the bike now and it still seems to do it. I am wondering if it runs lean down low to pass emissions? I am not hammering on the bike when this happens nor am I babying it either, say a little less than half throttle. Do any of you guys have this problem? Any info would be appreciated.

No just leaving a light in 1ST 2nd 3rd I can hear it I think even in 4th but it is a little windy. I just traded in my 99 zx9r for this and never heard anything like this on that bike. I am not hammering on the bike or goin to easy on it either. Could it be that the bike is brand new, part of the break in ??? I dunno

the 07-08 have almost no torque even at mid range. Mine does the same thing if I don't give it more throttle. It's an rpm queen. takes a little while to get used to. rev higher and slip the clutch slower.

Thanks Slider, makes sense.... It is a rude awakening going to a bike that has no torque!!!! I used to leave my 9R in 4th all day and ride. Now I have to work like a rented mule to keep up momentum. That is a nice sound to hear it hit 12000rpm. I still haven't goosed her all the way yet, I figure I will wait till about 600 km then I'll start to ride it hard.

My '08 zx6r seems to have no balls until 8000 rpms. You have to keep the revs up. Mine will ping with premium gas if you lug the engine down low. With 13.3:1 compression that is seriously pushing the limits of pump gas. You may want to try a different brand of gas. Here when I buy speedway gas w/ ethanol blend my bike pings like hell.

If I use Exxon gas it does not hardly ping at all. Even when it is hot outside.

You could also do a manual toggle switch on your engine fan and keep it on all the time to cool the engine down more. That will reduce your detonation too.

My bike never goes above 170 F and normally hovers around 158-163F with the fan on all the time.

On my '08 I ran a 16 awg wire from the positive batter cable with a 10 amp inline fuse next to the batter to a lighted LED toggle switch up front. Then ran the wire from the switch to the (Blue) fan wire. This way I have full control of the fan without waiting for the engine to get to 216 F to come on only to cool it down to 205 F and turn off.

You have to remember to turn the switch off when you get off your bike or you will kill your battery fast.

I figure this will make the engine live longer on hot summer days.
